Position Summary

The Field Safety Professional is a proactive, highly visible leader responsible for driving a world-class safety culture across field operations. This position serves as a trusted advisor to employees, supervisors, customers, and management by providing real-time safety support, regulatory guidance, coaching, and risk management. The ideal candidate is forward-thinking, solutions-oriented, and capable of working independently while building strong relationships with both employees and customers.

This role requires extensive field presence, including travel to customer sites, shops, and active projects involving municipal underground infrastructure, line intervention, hot tapping, line stopping, mechanical services, and related industrial operations.

Essential Responsibilities

Field Leadership

  • Conduct frequent field visits to customer locations, shops, and project sites to evaluate work practices and coach employees.
  • Actively engage employees before, during, and after work activities to identify hazards and develop practical solutions.
  • Build strong working relationships with customers while representing the company in a professional manner.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through leadership by example rather than enforcement alone.
  • Participate in pre-job planning, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks, and high-risk work planning.
  • Verify that work is being performed safely and in compliance with company standards and customer expectations.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain expert knowledge of applicable regulations including:
  • OSHA
  • DOT/FMCSA
  • EPA (as applicable)
  • Local, State, and Federal regulations
  • Municipal utility safety requirements
  • Industry best practices
  • Interpret regulatory requirements and communicate them clearly to operations personnel.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections and customer safety audits.
  • Ensure compliance with permits, confined space, excavation, lockout/tagout, hot work, and other critical safety programs.

Operational Support

  • Serve as the primary safety resource for field employees and supervisors.
  • Provide guidance on hazard recognition, risk assessment, and safe work practices.
  • Assist operations in developing practical solutions without negatively impacting productivity.
  • Participate in customer meetings regarding safety performance and expectations.
  • Review work scopes for potential hazards before work begins.
  • Support emergency response activities when necessary.

Incident Prevention & Investigation

  • Investigate incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events.
  • Identify immediate, contributing, and root causes.
  • Develop effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track corrective actions to completion.
  • Share lessons learned throughout the organization.

Safety Program Management

  • Conduct:
  • Safety audits
  • Behavioral observations
  • Field inspections
  • Equipment inspections
  • Driver evaluations
  • Contractorsafety plans
  • Monitor leading and lagging indicators.
  • Recommend improvements to safety programs and procedures.
  • Assist in developing safety training materials and company initiatives.

Customer Relations

  • Develop professional relationships with customer safety representatives.
  • Attend customer safety meetings.
  • Participate in contractor safety evaluations.
  • Represent the company during customer audits and safety reviews.
  • Communicate safety performance professionally and confidently.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive safety experience in industrial, municipal, utility, pipeline, or heavy construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Municipal underground infrastructure
  • Excavation safety
  • Confined space entry
  • Mechanical services
  • Pipeline maintenance
  • Line intervention activities
  • Hot tapping
  • Line stopping
  • Pressure-containing systems
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Experience performing field audits and safety inspections.
  • Strong incident investigation experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with ability to travel extensively.

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
  • OSHA 500/510
  • OSHA 30 (Construction or General Industry)
  • CHST
  • First Aid/CPR Instructor
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour
  • Competent Person certifications (Excavation, Fall Protection, Confined Space)
