Registered Nurse – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Position Summary

Join our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) team as a Registered Nurse and provide high-quality, compassionate care to critically ill and unstable patients. The ICU RN utilizes advanced nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, technical skills, and effective communication to assess patients, develop and implement individualized plans of care, and evaluate patient outcomes in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

The ICU RN develops specialized critical care skills and a strong working knowledge of cardiac monitoring, life-support equipment, and other medical technologies and nursing interventions essential to caring for critically ill patients. This position also provides education and emotional support to patients and families while promoting comfort, dignity, safety, and a healing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the physical, emotional, and developmental needs of critically ill patients.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

  • Provide direct nursing care to critically ill and unstable patients.

  • Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms and other critical patient data.

  • Safely operate and maintain competency with life-support equipment, cardiac monitoring systems, and other critical care technology.

  • Recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately and promptly.

  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with established standards and protocols.

  • Coordinate patient care throughout the hospitalization.

  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment, self-care, lifestyle changes, and health promotion.

  • Provide emotional support to patients and families during critical illness.

  • Promote patient comfort, dignity, safety, and well-being.

  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.

  • Collaborate effectively with physicians and members of the interdisciplinary care team.

  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Contribute to a positive team environment through effective communication and role modeling.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.

  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

License & Certifications

  • Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license or New York State limited permit to practice.

  • BLS and ACLS required through the RQI system during clinical orientation.

  • Basic Coronary Care certification must be obtained within six months of hire.

  • CCRN certification recommended within two years.

Experience

  • One year of acute care nursing experience.

  • One year of critical care experience preferred

Additional Requirements

  • Moderate sedation competency must be obtained within six months of hire.

  • Strong clinical judgment and analytical skills.

  • Ability to assess patient needs, develop and implement plans of care, and evaluate outcomes.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Professional and courteous approach when interacting with patients, families, coworkers, and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Computer literacy required.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products and electronic medical records preferred.

Patient Population

The ICU RN must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to patients across the lifespan, including:

  • Pediatric

  • Adolescent

  • Adult

  • Geriatric

The RN must understand principles of growth and development and be able to assess and interpret patient-specific information to meet the needs of each population.
