Under the general supervision of an assigned lead or Foreman operates a variety of light and heavy equipment in the maintenance, repairs, and construction of the City of Georgetown street, stormwater (drainage), and right-of-way infrastructure. Performs work in accordance with City standards and specifications.

The Light Equipment Operator role includes two specialization areas. All operators perform shared essential functions to ensure safe and effective equipment operation. Each operator is assigned to a specialization, which includes additional duties and technical skills unique to that focus. There are vacancies in both areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills.  This is not a comprehensive list of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodation will be provided as required.  The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer.  Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Operates, and performs general maintenance on a variety of light and heavy equipment.

  • Participate in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City infrastructure

  • Operates various trucks, and equipment including dump trucks, pickups, mowers, etc

  • Operates and maintains small tools, such as concrete finishing tools, sprayers containing herbicides, weed-eaters, saws, and other equipment

  • Trims, removes, and chips fallen and overgrown trees.

  • Re-grades, and cleans ditches, culverts, storm sewers, and ponds to reduce and minimize flooding.

  • Sets forms for curbs and drain inlets.

  • Performs concrete maintenance including forming, setting rebar, pouring and finishing for curbs, streets, driveways, sidewalks, etc. in accordance with ADA standards and specifications.

  • Participates in asphalt maintenance such as raking, rolling, grading, sanding, and patching potholes on streets and right of way.

  • Conducts and documents safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, wear protective and safety gear as indicated for the work assignment.

  • Prepares tools, materials, supplies and equipment necessary to complete work assignments.

  • Participates in the set up and removal of Traffic Control as needed.

  • Coordinates and assists other areas of Operations

  • Transport equipment to and from assigned worksites.

  • Performs essential duties during emergencies

  • May serve as lead for assigned staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Light Equipment Operator – Concrete Specialized Functions

  • Pouring, placing, smoothing, and leveling concrete using a rake, trowel, float, and screen.

  • The use of specialized handheld tools and power tool versions of float, trowel and other concrete tools.

  • Operates various trucks, and equipment, including dump trucks, pickups, mixers, etc.

  • Site preparation, pouring or laying concrete materials, and finishing surfaces for sidewalks, ADA ramps, bridges, etc.

Light Equipment Operator – Stormwater Specialized Functions

  • Traffic control setup and monitoring.

  • Street sweeping.

  • Mowing.

  • Construction or cleaning of underground stormwater systems.

  • Grading.

  • Construction, repair or maintenance of stormwater ponds.

  • Operating motor grader, backhoe, mini excavator, street sweeper.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training and Experience Guidelines

Six (6) months of full-time work experience performing work that is consistent with the essential and specialized functions for this classification.  OR Any combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance and repair related to municipal infrastructure. (streets, sidewalks, drainage)

  • Occupational safety and health regulations, practices and procedures for assignment area.

  • Basic understanding related to the construction of street & stormwater drainage infrastructure.

Skill in:

  • Operating light/heavy machinery and equipment.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Documenting work both electronically and in writing.

  • Reading and understanding equipment manuals and safety hazard warnings on equipment and materials.

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.

  • Following occupational safety and health procedures.

  • Solving construction and repair problems.

Preferred Knowledge – Concrete Specialization:

  • Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair related to concrete structures

  • Basic understanding related to the construction of curb, gutter, and sidewalk

  • Basic knowledge of traffic control procedures.

  • Basic knowledge of pouring, placing, smoothing, and leveling concrete

  • Basic knowledge in concrete forming or carpentry

Preferred Knowledge – Stormwater Specialization:

  • Basic knowledge of traffic control setup and monitoring

  • Basic knowledge of street sweeping

  • Basic knowledge of mowing

  • Basic knowledge of construction of underground stormwater systems

  • Basic knowledge of grading

  • Basic knowledge of construction, repair or maintenance of stormwater ponds

  • Basic knowledge of motor grader, backhoe, mini excavator, street sweeper

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Texas driving license.

  • Must have or be able to obtain class B CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit), Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License Tanker Endorsement (includes air brakes) within nine (9) months of employment.

DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, and use of foot controls.

  • Temperature extremes from weather; dust; work near moving traffic; noise from street sweepers. Routine scheduled twenty-four (24) hour on-call time is required on a rotating basis within the department.

Hiring Range: $18.36 - $23.00, hourly.
