The Director of Probation Services plays a pivotal leadership role in shaping and advancing the mission of the Adams County Department of Probation Services. As a key member of the department’s executive team, the Director assists the Chief and Deputy Chiefs in defining a long-term vision that ensures effective administration, coordination, and operational excellence across probation services. This role holds direct responsibility for managing an assigned unit, including its staff and programs, to promote public safety and support offender rehabilitation within the court system. The Director also serves as a peace officer with powers of arrest, demonstrating commitment to maintaining community safety and upholding justice under the Adams County Court of Common Pleas jurisdiction.
This Director position supervises Juvenile Probation Services; therefore, experience with juvenile justice is highly preferred.
Education, Experience and Training Requirements:
- Verification of Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is required, with knowledge of modern principles of criminology; degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or related field is preferred.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in probation services and working knowledge of courts, corrections, and/or law enforcement, as well as county, state, and federal government, and the ability to understand the interrelationship of these various levels of government is required.
- After hire, obtaining/maintaining certification in Protective Safety Systems and Firearms certification is required.
- After hire, annual completion of 40 hours of training per PCCD and/or JCJC requirements.
- Valid driver’s license.
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office products required; participation in training provided by the employer is expected.
- Knowledge of contemporary office practices and procedures.
- Criminal background checks and clearances, including but not limited to fingerprinting, upon offer of employment.
- Subject to the Medical Marijuana Act, 35 P.S. § 10231.510(4), which prohibits an employee from being under the influence of medical marijuana in performance of duties within this job description.
- Subject to Act 57 of 2020 background checks and employment reporting.
The Director of Probation Services will work throughout various locations within Adams County, including the Adams County Courthouse, Department of Probation Services offices, and community settings where court-related probation operations are conducted. This role requires a high level of physical fitness and readiness to engage in potentially hazardous situations, including the possibility of detaining individuals and handling emergencies. The incumbent is expected to uphold rigorous safety protocols, maintaining a professional and secure work environment both inside and outside the office, and is subject to variable working hours that may include evenings, weekends, and overtime to accommodate court and operational needs.
Minimum starting annual salary: Â $57,708.04
