Veterinary Emergency Technician

$20–$29/hour | Gilbert, AZ | Full-Time | 3x12-Hour Shifts

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is hiring an experienced Veterinary Emergency Technician to join our 24-hour emergency and critical care hospital in Gilbert, AZ. Work alongside experienced veterinarians and specialists while caring for emergency, outpatient, and hospitalized patients. Our team has opportunities to participate in advanced procedures including dialysis and total plasma exchange while developing skills across emergency medicine, surgery, diagnostics, and critical care.

In Your Day-to-Day You Will

Triage & Emergency Patient Care

  • Assist veterinarians with the evaluation and treatment of emergency patients

  • Obtain patient histories, vital signs, weights, and other initial assessments

  • Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly to the veterinary team

  • Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, diagnostics, and hospitalization

  • Place IV catheters and administer medications accurately under veterinary direction

  • Provide nursing and husbandry care for hospitalized patients

  • Perform admission assessments and assist with patient discharges

  • Participate actively in patient rounds and provide complete, accurate handoffs between team members

  • Maintain accurate and legally defensible medical records

Diagnostics & Clinical Support

  • Assist veterinarians with outpatient examinations and emergency procedures

  • Perform in-house laboratory testing and prepare samples for outside laboratories

  • Collect samples and perform diagnostic testing as needed

  • Assist with radiology, ultrasound, ECG, blood pressure, and glucose monitoring

  • Fill prescriptions according to veterinarian instructions and educate clients on medication administration

  • Perform client callbacks and communicate patient updates as directed

  • Support veterinarians and technicians caring for complex emergency and critical care cases

  • Gain exposure to advanced treatments such as dialysis and total plasma replacement

Surgical & Anesthesia Support

  • Prepare surgical areas, instruments, equipment, and surgical packs

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-operative medications, induction, intubation, and surgical preparation

  • Monitor anesthesia using equipment such as pulse oximetry and ECG

  • Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures

  • Monitor patients through anesthesia recovery

  • Maintain anesthesia equipment and ensure oxygen and waste-gas systems are functioning properly

  • Maintain accurate anesthesia and surgical records

  • Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and maintain the surgery suite according to hospital protocols

  • Prepare hospitalized patients for discharge and ensure they are in an appropriate medical condition

Support the Emergency Team

  • Maintain clean, stocked, and organized examination and treatment areas

  • Follow hospital protocols for patient care, medication handling, safety, and infection control

  • Support other areas of the hospital as patient volume and staffing needs change

  • Collaborate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, technician assistants, and specialty teams

  • Help teammates learn clinical processes and techniques

  • Identify opportunities to improve patient care, client service, and hospital efficiency

  • Approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous veterinary technician experience or equivalent experience performing the duties of this position

  • Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine

  • Veterinary nursing and technical skills

  • Experience with IV catheter placement, medication administration, and drug calculations

  • Experience with patient monitoring and veterinary diagnostics

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced emergency hospital

  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn veterinary practice-management systems

  • Professional, dependable, and team-oriented approach

  • Ability to remain calm and effective in a high-volume emergency environment

  • Willingness to learn advanced emergency and critical care techniques

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC) is a 24-hour emergency and critical care veterinary hospital in Gilbert, AZ. Our clinical team works alongside experienced veterinarians and specialty teams including neurology, internal medicine, dermatology, oncology, and surgery to provide advanced care for complex patients.

Our technicians and Technician Assistants have opportunities to expand their skills and participate in advanced procedures while progressing through a structured career pathway from Technician Assistant to Senior Veterinary Technician, Shift Lead, Supervisor, and Manager.

Schedule

  • Full-time

  • Three 12-hour shifts per week

  • Day, swing, and overnight shifts available

  • Sunday–Wednesday, 12 p.m.–12 a.m.

  • Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, 7 p.m.–7 a.m.

  • Various day shifts, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.

  • Overnight pay differential available
