Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, excavators, skid steer machines, and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by management, policies and procedures.

  • None.

Reports To

  • Foreman, Superintendent (if no foreman on site)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Loading and unloading equipment from vehicles used to transport it

  • Inspecting equipment before and after use to ensure it’s in good working order

  • Driving or controlling heavy equipment to complete tasks at the construction site

  • Monitoring performance and adjusting settings on equipment as required to perform tasks correctly

  • Recognize and communicate potential hazards at every site. 
  • Tracking scheduled maintenance of equipment and notifying their Supervisor if maintenance is past due

  • Filling out performance records to report problems with equipment and track where and when it was used

  • Cleaning equipment after use and disposing of any collected scraps or waste

  • Completing minor repair work as needed

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Relevant certification as needed for specific equipment operated
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics
  • Coordination to use all the controls on pieces of equipment
  • Possessing enough strength to operate the controls on heavy equipment
  • Must be willing to work overtime with little or no notice during the week, weekends, holidays, etc. as dictated by operations.
  • Must be willing and able to work as a part of team, take direction from supervisor(s), keep required work schedules, focus attention to details, and follow work rules.
  • GPS/GNSS skills a plus

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Physical Requirements

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Coordination to use all the controls on pieces of equipment
  • Possessing enough strength to operate the controls on heavy equipment
  • Ability to remain stationary in the seat or operating area of the equipment for prolonged periods
