Position Summary

The IT Support Technician provides on-site technical support for mill operations and office personnel at a Packaging Corporation of America paper mill. This role supports plant-floor manufacturing systems, end-user computing, and basic network infrastructure while working closely with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.

This is an entry-level position intended for candidates seeking hands-on experience in manufacturing and industrial IT within a safety-focused mill environment.

 

Responsibilities

End User & Site Support

  • Provide first-level support for desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, and mobile devices
  • Assist mill employees with Windows-based systems, Microsoft 365, email, and standard PCA applications
  • Image, configure, and deploy new PCs and peripherals
  • Create and maintain user accounts and access following PCA policies

Manufacturing & Mill Systems

  • Provide basic support for mill production, quality, and reporting systems
  • Assist with operator workstations, control room PCs, HMIs, and industrial terminals
  • Support systems such as OSIsoft PI, ParcView, QIS, or similar manufacturing platforms
  • Coordinate with operations, engineering, and corporate IT to resolve system issues affecting production

Network & Infrastructure Support

  • Assist with troubleshooting wired and wireless connectivity issues
  • Perform basic cable tracing, device replacement, and switch port verification
  • Support network-connected industrial equipment and scanners throughout the mill

Asset Management & Documentation

  • Track IT assets and maintain accurate inventory records
  • Document incidents, resolutions, and system changes
  • Follow established PCA IT standards and change management processes

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all PCA safety rules, policies, and procedures
  • Use required PPE when working in mill and production areas
  • Maintain cybersecurity, data protection, and acceptable use standards

 

Qualifications 

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware, Windows operating systems, and networking fundamentals
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to support off-shift operations as needed

Preferred

  • Associate degree or coursework in Information Technology or related field
  • Internship, co-op, or help desk experience
  • Exposure to manufacturing or industrial environments
  • Familiarity with: Microsoft 365; Active Directory (basic user administration); Industrial systems or HMIs

Physical & Work Environment

  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and varying temperatures
  • Ability to walk production areas, climb stairs and ladders, and work around operating equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • On-site role; may require off-hours or weekend support
