Job Summary: 


The Engineering Managers’ primary job function is leading and directing the Engineering Team and driving the execution of the strategic plan for the Operations Department. This role ensures that equipment, infrastructure and process projects are safely designed, properly executed, delivered on budget and schedule, and aligned with long-term business strategy.


Essential Functions:

 

Strategic Project Execution

  • Lead and mentor team through execution of strategic projects including:
    • New or upgraded manufacturing equipment and/or infrastructure installations 
    • Process transfer or optimization activities
    • Equipment relocation or decommissioning activities
  • Own projects from concept through closeout:
    • Scope definition
    • Budget development
    • Management of Change Documentation
    • Design oversight
    • Execution
    • Commissioning and Turnover to Production Team
  • Manage multi-year capital programs aligned with business growth and modernization plans


Engineering Design & Technical Oversight

  • Serve as technical authority for:
    • Process and facility engineering interfaces
    • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls design
    • Equipment layout, foundations, and utilities 
  • Review and approve:
  • Engineering drawings and specifications
  • Equipment submittals
  • Design changes 
  • Develop and maintain:
    • Engineering design standards
    • Equipment and utility specifications
    • Drawing control and as-built documentation
    • Repository for technical equipment and process knowledge
  • Ensure accurate handoff to:
    • Facilities for building systems
    • Maintenance for equipment and PM ownership
  • Ensure designs are safe, maintainable, code-compliant, and fit for long-term use

 Contractor & Consultant Management

  • Select and manage:
    • General contractors and specialty trades
    • Equipment vendors and integrators
  • Define scopes of work and manage:
    • Cost controls
    • Schedule adherence
    • Quality and safety performance
  • Coordinate shutdowns, tie-ins, and commissioning activities with operations

Regulatory, EHS & Code Compliance

  • Ensure engineering projects comply with:
    • OSHA and applicable safety standards
    • NFPA and building/fire codes
    • Environmental and permitting requirements
  • Partner with EHS to:
    • Integrate safety into design
    • Support Process Safety Management, Management of Change and hazard reviews where applicable
    • Close audit and inspection findings related to manufacturing equipment and/or infrastructure

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Operations and Manufacturing
    • Maintenance and Reliability
    • Facilities and EHS
    • IT and Automation teams
  • Translate business needs into engineered solutions
  • Ensure projects minimize disruption to ongoing production

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a safe work environment and that all practices are conducted in a safe and effective manner. Manage with safety, associate well-being and environmental protection as a priority.
  • Plan and manage the Engineering Department to achieve consistent strategic plan deliverables.
  • Ensuring the department is properly staffed and trained to execute deliverables.
  • Develop and regularly monitor key project-based metrics and communicate status versus goals. 
  • Responsible for the development of specifications and budgets for proposed projects.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to Operations, Maintenance, and Innovation departments.
  • Implement and support AR’s policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Ensure all manufacturing equipment and infrastructure is effectively qualified and validated (where needed).
  • Establish and maintain organized engineering records for buildings, utilities and equipment.
  • Execute functions such as hiring and discipline, timecard scheduling, communicating expectations and job descriptions, provide coaching and development opportunities, and annual reviews.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement actions.
  • Conduct all aspects of position in a professional, respectful manner consistent with AR Guiding Principles.
  • Embrace 6S LEAN culture, and organize personal work areas and appearance.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Job Specifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership with regards to Safe Work Practices
  • Bachelors Engineering degree – preferably chemical, mechanical, electrical engineering.
  • 10+ years facilities and equipment engineering and 5+ years engineering experience preferably in adhesives and/or coatings with demonstrated ability to deliver beneficial business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in concurrent management of multiple small and large scale projects resulting in desired outcomes on-time and within budget.
  • Strong understanding of polymerization, mixing, coating, web handling, drying, slitting processes and equipment desired.
  • Strong leadership, influencing, interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills; ability to communicate within all levels of the organization, as well as with outside organizations and agencies; team player.
  • Must communicate fluently in English and have legible handwriting
  • Proficiency with standard desktop computer software applications.
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of the time (including some international).
