Position Summary:

From an operational resilience perspective, this role strengthens real-time decision-making, escalation management, and continuity of operations. Control Room Managers provide on-site leadership presence and are accountable for responding to off-hours events, elevated grid conditions, and staffing shortages, ensuring the ROC maintains safe, compliant, and reliable operations under all conditions. This role positions the ROC to safely and effectively support a rapidly expanding renewable energy portfolio while maintaining alignment with corporate performance and regulatory compliance.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage ROC Operators to ensure effective operation of the Xcel Energy-owned renewable fleet. Drive performance against reset and analysis metrics, corporate goals, and ensure safe, reliable operations while maintaining full environmental, NERC, and regulatory compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, and other regulatory requirements related to Generator Operator and control room functions. Monitor compliance metrics and support audits and regulatory proceedings as needed.

  • Provide technical leadership in advanced troubleshooting and execution, including battery block, inverter and turbine resets, HMI plant control issues, commissioning documentation, and oversight of transmission work requests for accuracy and implementation.

  • Oversee daily ROC operations to ensure timely reset of faulted equipment, safe field execution, and reliable system performance. Ensure proper approvals, coordination, and operator representation for site control system upgrades, testing, EMS activities, transmission work requests, outage response, and emergency operations.

  • Analyze and resolve complex operational issues independently and in coordination with Operations Managers, O&M leadership, engineering, contractors, construction, transmission partners, and IT to ensure timely resolution.

  • Train ROC Operators on NERC Generator Operator and control room standards, ensuring proper documentation, knowledge retention, and compliance adherence.

  • Develop procedures for new sites, including design review, remote troubleshooting strategies, and callout processes in advance of site commissioning.

  • Audit ROC Operations Logs, shift turnover documentation, testing records, and regulatory documentation for accuracy and completeness. Implement corrections and provide targeted coaching to uphold documentation standards.

  • Develop and maintain training materials and procedural documentation to support evolving regulatory requirements, new site integration, and changing business strategies. Deliver training to ensure operator readiness and consistency.

  • Coordinate schedules to ensure 24/7 staffing coverage. Perform ROC Operator duties as needed to maintain operational continuity during staffing gaps.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS or BA in business, economics, mathematics, engineering, or equivalent course of study that demonstrates strong analytical and technical skills. Five years’ applicable work experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • Three years of supervisory experience.

  • Minimum of two years of experience in remotely operating utility scale renewable resources in a control room environment.

  • Requires five or more years in design, construction, operations, engineering or maintenance of utility systems/power generation plants or related industries/fields or equivalent.

  • Operational knowledge of remote utility scale renewable resource operations, reliability standards, NERC compliance requirements for Generator Operators and Control Room Operations, and organized wholesale energy markets.

  • Reliability Coordinator NERC Certification required within 6 months of hire.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively lead a team required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, problem solving, critical thinking, analytical decision making.

  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.

  • Ability to occasionally work a 12-hour shift to provide staff coverage.

  • On call to support 24/7/365 control room operations.

Preferred Requirements

  • Remote operations experience with GE, Vestas, Siemens, Sungrow and/or SMA renewable resource equipment.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $112,200.00 to $159,400.00 per year
