Position Summary

Position prepares operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques. Provides technical services and assists in other areas as assigned and directed. Position assists in nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient by performance of routine and delegated duties according to the standards and policies of the hospital and department. Performs scrub duties and related procedures and provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as scheduled and emergency cases.

  • Utilizes the written individualized Physician Preference card for the surgical procedure.
  • Coordinates with circulating nurse to provide supplies, equipment and instruments for designated surgical procedure. Adheres to proper sterile technique. Conducts and documents sponge, instrument and needle counts and operating room time-out procedures.
  • Recognizes, intervenes and reports, as indicated, any changes in the patient's status in a timely manner. Promptly answers patient's needs and requests pre-operatively and inter-operatively.
  • Utilizes a working knowledge of current surgical scrub technology and medical terminology.
  • Coordinates with circulating nurse to continuously assess case progress and patient's safety. Utilizes appropriate charging mechanisms and assists with recovery of lost charges.
  • Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned

  • Special Skills: Excellent customer service skills and basic computer skills.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Education: High school graduate or equivalent GED for all current employees. Completion of formal ORT program for all new hires.
    • Experience: Thorough knowledge and experience in operative procedures, equipment and instrumentation.
    • Licensure/Certification is CPR.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience: One year of hospital/surgical background or experience.
    • Certification/Registration: Completion of accredited Operating Room Technology course.
