Head Lifeguard

POSITION SUMMARY:

Ensure safety of all individuals in the pool area, enforce all pool rules, recognize and respond to emergency situations.  Act as a lead support to the lifeguard team in the absence of the Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1.  Ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained aquatic environment.   
  2.  Ensure that all pool rules are being followed and be accessible and identifiable while guarding a pool.
  3.  Ensure safety and prevent injuries by supervising pool area, scanning pool and pool area every 10 seconds and react immediately to signs of individuals in distress.  
  4.  Ensure that anyone present in the aquatic area are following all applicable standards and rules.
  5.  Ensure no distraction or interference with the ability to hear or see signs of distress.
  6.  Ensure a safe, clean environment for staff and customers by picking up all paper, hair, pins, towels, and items that can be a hazard in pool area. 
  7.  Ensure that pool staffing is within YMCA standards before leaving the area or performing maintenance items.  
  8.  When interacting with members or others, do so in a positive and professional manner.
  9.  Assist the Aquatic Coordinator in the orientation and training of other lifeguards.
  10.  Act as the lead aquatic staff person on duty when Coordinator is not present, and act as a back-up for the Coordinator during absences (assisting with scheduling, ensuring appropriate levels of staff coverage etc.)
  11.  Perform pool maintenance duties in accordance with OSHA Hazardous Materials Precautions, hose down pool deck, put away all equipment and perform water quality testing.
  12.  Administer first aid to victims using OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Universal Precautions.  Provide immediate care to sustain life until Emergency Medical Service arrives.
  13.  Inform supervisor and staff of equipment need, water chemistry and temperature.
  14.  Maintain required certifications. 
  15.  Participate in aquatic training and drills as assigned. 
  16.  Maintain pool logs, pool updates and incident reports.
  17.  May be required to pursue pool operator certification and backwash pool filtration system and monitor pool chemicals.
  18.  Other related duties as assigned.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  •  20 years of age or four years’ experience as a lifeguard with current American Red Cross (or equivalent) Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid & AED and O2 certifications.
  •  Must be willing to work nights and weekends.
  •  Prefer Lifeguard Instructor certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Ability to see and hear individuals and alarms in pool/pool area.
  •  Ability to perform endurance swims and rescue procedures.
  •  Ability to use chemistry test kit.
  •  Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  •  Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  •  Ability to perform activities which require sustained concentration and attention. 
  • Advanced surveillance and scanning proficiency 
  • Strong emergency leadership under pressure 
  • Clear, assertive communication Conflict resolution and patron management 
  • Strong understanding of aquatic risk management principles 
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback
