Creative Dining at Calvin University is hiring immediately for a full-time Pantry Prep Cook. 

  • Location: 3201 Burton St SE Grand Rapids, MI 49546
  • Schedule: Full time schedule. More information upon interview
  • Requirement: 1-2 years of experience required.
  • Pay Range: $16-19

As the Prep Cook, works within the Dining Services Department to ensure that high quality, properly seasoned, nutritious food is being provided throughout the operation, in a safe manner. Works cooperatively as a valued member of the dining services team, assisting with any aspect of the dining services program necessary. 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities 

  • Prepare food such that all food is ready for use within the established timeframe. 
  • Prepares food items according to established recipes and menus in a manner in which preserves food freshness, quality and appeal. 
  • Utilizes safe food handling techniques at all times. 
  • Stores food items according to established standards of practice; utilize proper labeling and dating. 
  • Holds prepared food items at appropriate temperatures (below 40° if cold, above 135° if hot). 
  • Maintains production records (food usage, overages, shortages, customer counts, etc.) . 
  • Maintains established logs (food temperatures, cooling temperatures, cooler & freezer temperatures, etc.). 
  • Maintains a clean and sanitized work area. 
  • Maintains a safe, tidy and well organized work environment at all times; cleans up spills quickly, wears protective gear as needed (i.e. slicer glove), and stores wares safely. 
  • Communicates needs and concerns regarding food production and kitchen operation to supervisor appropriately, and in a timely manner. 
  • Monitors kitchen equipment for proper functioning; report any discrepancies to supervisor immediately. 
  • Supports other kitchen employees in assuring that the essential functions of the kitchen are performed adequately and appropriately. 
  • Assists in ordering and inventory procedures. 
  • Removes refuse as needed. 
  • Puts away/Pulls stock as needed. 
  • For those working in a lead role, additional duties include: 
  • Provide leadership and instruction; Keep management apprised of overall operations; 
  • Refer and provide information to higher level manager/supervisor regarding issues or concerns; and perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

The Prep Cook position includes physical work moving inventory, product, carts, tables, etc. as well as food preparation and production using kitchen utensils and commercial kitchen equipment.  Must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs.  Environment may include hot, humid, or cold temperatures.  May require extended working hours at times.

Education – Skills - Expectations

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred 
  • Minimum of 1 year food service experience preferred 
  • ServSafe Certification

Must possess a positive, can-do attitude, be detail-oriented, and possess a well-rounded knowledge of the food service industry. Must maintain professionalism at all times, and work with others in a cooperative manner, even while working under pressure. Willing to engage actively in the physical work of a high-quality hospitality service operation.
