Job Description

We offer a merit-based work-from-home program based on job responsibilities. After initial training in-person, this specific role could have the flexibility to work from home up to 3 days per week.

Please note that we are not currently hiring fully remote positions. All candidates must have the ability to work in one of our tech offices. Our tech office for this role is in Lansing, Michigan only.

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated individual to join our IT Division as an Application Security specialist. Responsibilities include working with our Application Security team to help define security policy, and working with various development teams across the division to help improve the security posture of our applications. The position requires the person to:

  • Analyze security vulnerabilities to determine impact to our systems, and work with development teams to prioritize addressing known issues
  • Educate development teams on best practices regarding application security
  • Monitor our applications for new vulnerabilities as they are discovered
  • Communicate status and progress of our application security posture to management
  • Consult with developers, architects, project leaders, and management to resolve problems and suggest alternatives

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, a related field, or equivalent experience is required
  • Past employment experience on one or more application development teams is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of Java and RESTful services is strongly preferred
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Splunk strongly preferred
  • Experience with a modern IDE is strongly preferred
  • Experience with our current security tools is preferred
  • Familiarity with OWASP and CVEs is preferred
  • Enthusiasm for driving improvement by finding and implementing solutions to new challenges
  • Must be able to learn and effectively use tools and software development techniques as practiced, acquired, or adopted within the IT Division
