Job Description Summary:
The Behavioral Health Consultant II provides brief mental health and substance abuse interventions to clients in an integrated care setting. This role involves assessing and diagnosing co-occurring behavioral health needs, including mental health and substance use disorders, and working closely with a primary care team. The position is responsible for treatment planning, interventions, referrals, and collaborating with medical providers to address both physical and behavioral health needs in a fast-paced setting. The consultant must also comply with the organization’s policies, procedures, and licensing standards.
This is a full time, benefit eligible position typically working Monday to Friday onsite at our Burton Health Center. Bilingual in Spanish is required.
Responsibilities:
- Clinical Interventions:
- Provide brief mental health and substance abuse interventions in an integrated care team environment.
- Assess and diagnose mental health and substance use disorders according to the DSM.
- Utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI), Brief Action Planning, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address co-occurring health needs.
- Referral and Care Coordination:
- Make internal and external referrals based on client needs and coordinate care between medical providers, therapists, and external agencies.
- Work with community, referral, and funding sources to ensure clients receive the necessary services.
- Participate in team huddles, case conferences, and regularly scheduled meetings to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Ensure timely completion of service authorizations and perform utilization reviews.
- Coordinate with primary care providers and psychiatrists to manage the biological aspects of treatment.
- Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals when necessary.
- Professional Development & Training:
- Attend required supervision meetings and participate in ongoing training programs.
- Share knowledge and skills with colleagues to foster team learning and development.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the organization’s mission.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- A Master of Social Work (LMSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Limited Licensed Psychologist (LLP) by the State of Michigan is required, as determined by program requirements.
- Must have or be able to apply for CAADC certification through MCBAP within 30 days of hire.
- Heartsaver within 90 days of hire.
- Experience:
- At least two years of experience in mental health and/or substance abuse assessment and treatment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties.
- Skills/Knowledge:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and proficiency with computer systems.
- Ability to function in a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- A thorough understanding of Motivational Interviewing, Brief Action Planning, and CBT methodologies.
Physical Requirements:
- Exposure: Potential exposure to patients/clients with infectious diseases.
- Work Tasks: Frequent use of telephone and computer, requiring manual dexterity.
- Physical Activities: Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Bending, squatting, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
- Vision: Specific vision requirements may include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

- Desktop or laptop computer

- Networked copier/printer/fax machine
- Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Environmental Factors:
- Indoor Work Environment: Primarily in office and healthcare settings with potential exposure to illnesses and infections.
- Travel: Some travel may be required depending on client needs.

The Behavioral Health Consultant II may serve all patient populations with a focus on providing integrated care for those experiencing mental health and/or substance use disorders.
