Overview

The primary function of aĀ dental assistantĀ (DA)Ā is to performĀ chair-sideĀ assistanceĀ in all areasĀ of dentistryĀ suchĀ as,Ā restorative, prosthodontics, surgery, endodontics, and periodontics for both routine and emergent care.Ā Dental Assistants will greet and seat patients, take radiographs, set-up instruments for procedures, clean/disinfect operatories,Ā use proper infection control protocol at all times.Ā Ā DA’sĀ are also involved with community programs such as theĀ School-based Sealant & Fluoride Varnish Program.Ā Ā DA’sĀ will rotate through all clinics within theĀ TCRHCCĀ Dental Program.Ā Ā DA’sĀ areĀ requiredĀ to work with the Electronic Dental RecordĀ (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR).Ā Ā Customer Service is a priority for all dental staff.Ā This position will primarily provide outpatient dental care services in the TCRHCCĀ Echo Cliffs.Ā 


Qualifications

Education:Ā 

  • Must have a high school diploma or GEDĀ 
  • Must have completed a Dental Assistant Training CourseĀ in a program ofĀ 13 weeksĀ or greater in duration; EXCEPTION due to Pandemic: If noĀ Dental Assistant Training Course has been completed, then candidate can be considered if one has worked as a Dental Assistant for 1 year within the past 3 yearsĀ

  • Applicant must have active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association.Ā Ā (BLSĀ certificationĀ 

must beĀ maintainedĀ during employment)Ā 

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Experience:Ā 

  • Must haveĀ experienceĀ withĀ chair-sideĀ assistanceĀ asĀ part of DentalĀ Assisting (DA) Training programĀ and be able toĀ demonstrateĀ knowledge of dental instrumentsĀ and experience with rubber-dam isolation.Ā 
  • Must have worked:Ā 
  • As aĀ DA continuously forĀ 1Ā yearĀ within the past 5 yearsĀ or as a volunteer DA for 2 monthsĀ ifĀ the date of graduationĀ from DA trainingĀ isĀ 5 yrs orĀ moreĀ fromĀ the date of application forĀ employmentĀ Ā  ORĀ 
  • As a DA or volunteer DA if the date of graduation from DA training isĀ 0-5Ā yrs from the date of application for employment.Ā 
  • ExceptionsĀ due to Pandemic:Ā 
    • IfĀ the date of graduation from DA training is within theĀ past 2Ā year, then experience is notĀ requiredĀ 
    • IfĀ no DA trainingĀ course completed, then must have worked for 1 year as a DA within the past 3 yearsĀ

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Ā 

  • Must prepare patient for proper dental procedures including setting up instrumentsĀ 
  • Sterilizing dental instruments and equipmentĀ at satellite clinicsĀ 
  • OrganizingĀ and laying out instruments for dental provider’s useĀ Ā 
  • Meeting and greeting patients and seating them in the dental chairĀ 
  • Keeps alert to condition of patient during treatment; checkingĀ forĀ signs of fainting, shock, or otherĀ signs ofĀ distressĀ 
  • Perform routine dental laboratory procedures including pouring and trimming models, constructing custom impression trays, fabricating base plates and bite rims, fabricating mouth guards, basic denture repairs,Ā etcĀ 
  • Perform rubber dam isolation for restorative/operative and endodontic proceduresĀ 
  • Responsible for cleaning,Ā packagingĀ and sterilizing all dental instruments andĀ proper storageĀ Ā 
  • Proficient in taking radiographsĀ 
  • Proficient in dental charting forĀ exams and treatment planningĀ 
  • AfterĀ appropriate training, may provideĀ supragingival cleaningsĀ using aĀ Piezon,Ā rubber cupĀ prophylaxis,Ā dentalĀ sealants, and fluoride treatments under general supervision by a dental providerĀ 
  • Provide Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) and Post-Op Instructions (POI) for certain procedures (e.g.Ā extractions, root canal treatments)Ā 
  • Must complete all mandatory trainings and certifications as required of the position in theĀ timeframeĀ designatedĀ by supervisor (e.g.Ā radiology, infection control, periodontal therapy, mandatory hospital trainings)Ā 
  • WillĀ work with EDR and EHRĀ programs; trainingĀ will be providedĀ 
  • Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.Ā Ā Ā 
  • Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)Ā 
  • Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensureĀ a high levelĀ of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction.Ā 
  • Completes all patient care documentation in the electronic health record entries accurately and in real-time.Ā Ā 
  • Performs other duties as assignedĀ
