As a Cast Technician, you will assist in the provision of care and treatment, providing casting and splinting as needed. In this role, you will gain on-the-job training, additional educational resources and hands-on experience in direct patient support to propel your career with Cleveland Clinic.
A caregiver in this role works days from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Measure, apply, change, remove and repair casts, braces and splints for patients.
Apply and instruct patients in the use of durable medical equipment.
Remove dressings, sutures and staples.
Prepare patients for exams and special procedures.
Identify and report changes in patient status to RN and/or MD.
Initiate CPR and emergency measures as required.
Assist in transporting and rooming patients as needed.
Provide health education to patients and families.
Ensure supplies are stocked and equipment is in safe working order.
Assist in ordering, re-ordering supplies, stocking clinical exam rooms and other stocking duties as needed.
Maintain all designated work areas in a neat, orderly manner.
Communicate patient concerns to the physician and other caregivers.
Facilitate the smooth operation of the outpatient clinic desk.
Coordinate resident and nursing in-service programs and presentations.
Meet with sales representatives to review new/different products used in cast application in conjunction with the Coordinator of Inventory Control.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
One year of experience as a Cast Technician or in a related position in the operating room or other related patient care setting OR Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program
Understanding of human anatomy sufficient to perform duties of the job
Basic knowledge of math
Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
Good visual acuity through normal or corrected vision.
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
