Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Surgical Technologist - GB, under the direction of the Registered Nurse and the Nurse Manager, handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she understands the surgical procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the surgical procedure and is maintains constant vigilance of the sterile field.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Following department standards maintains asepsis, positioning, prepping and draping, needle and instrument count, specimen care and dressing application.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization; cleans and decontaminates instruments; assists in cleaning/preparing OR suite for next case.
  • Provides appropriate instrumentation to surgeon.
  • Identifies changes in condition and reports to RN/Charge Nurse.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Completion of a certified scrub technician program.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist, LPN or EMT licensure required or two or more years of direct scrub related experience in hospital, surgery center or military background can be substituted for CST, LPN or EMT credential
  • Certified Surgical Technologist, LPN or EMT licensure required or two or more years of direct scrub related experience in hospital, surgery center or military background can be substituted for CST, LPN or EMT credential.


Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques involved in performing OR services and adapting or modifying standards of practices for care of specific medical cases.
