About the role

The Sonographer is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations for OB/GYN patients while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.  This position works collaboratively with physicians, midwives, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff to support timely diagnostic treatment.  The Sonographer maintains professional standards, ensures accurate documentation, and promotes and efficient patient flow.  

 

Supervision Received: Reports to Operations Manager 

 

Supervision Exercised: None.

 

Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves sitting, standing and walking. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and pay attention to detail. 


Typical Working Conditions:  Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Requires exposure to bodily fluids.

 

Responsibilities:  (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of practice for the sonographer and competency in diagnostic procedures; for OB/GYN, and other ultrasound examinations as ordered by the provider.
  2. Selecting and examining images, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas, and determining if the scope of the exam should be extended, based on preliminary findings and presenting those preliminary findings to the provider. 
  3. Provides documentation of individual patient care according to history and clinical information obtained from ultrasound study and quality assurance documentation as defined in the policy and procedure manual.
  4. Explains appropriately the rationale for ultrasound procedures to patients, answering questions, preparing patients by applying the gel to the skin, and positioning the patients on the table. 
  5. Recognizes changes in patient status and appropriately communicates to physician.
  6. Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis depending on the type of procedure being done.
  7. Exhibits a working knowledge of principles, practice and procedures involved in the operation of ultrasound equipment.
  8. Anticipates and recognizes safety hazards, legal liabilities and intervenes through appropriate channels.
  9. Provides and promotes quality care to all patients.
  10. Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with co-workers, patients and other employees of the department and office.
  11. Recognizes individual accountability for and participates in cost containment goals of the department and office.
  12. Demonstrates continuous self-improvement through utilization of knowledge gained in clinical experience in Ultrasound.
  13. Participates in in-service education, staff meetings and other continuing education programs to maintain optimal technical knowledge. Participates in continuing education and in-services outside Physicians East, P.A. office for 30 hours of continuing education every three years specific to ultrasound.
  14. Exhibits ability to problem solve, prioritize and evaluate patient care activities.
  15. Adheres to department and office policies.
  16. Accepts and supports learning needs of new staff and sonography students.
  17. Performs procedures requiring independent judgement with ingenuity and initiative.
  18. Evaluates equipment breakdowns and assesses the need for service.
  19. Responsible for appropriately charging procedures performed in accordance with federal law.
  20. Adheres to the policy and procedure for each ultrasound study and documenting the requirements of the study.
  21. Maintains area and equipment in a clean and orderly fashion.
  22. Attends safety classes and other continuing education classes as offered by Physicians East, P.A.
  23. Maintains yearly CPR certification. 

Location & commitments

Permanent FT role based at Greenville OB/GYN, Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m. -5:00p.m.

Overtime may be required to ensure patients are taken care, tasks are completed, and calls are returned in a timely manner. Weekend work is rare but can occasionally be necessary.

 

Candidate requirements:  Associate’s degree or completion of a program in medical sonography. Registered or registry eligible by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in abdomen, GYN, vascular, or breast. Two years of clinical experience is preferred.
