Overview

This position directly supervises food service workers, assistant cooks, cooks in a kitchen environment (union and classified). This position is responsible for hiring, scheduling, evaluating, training and formal discipline recommendations. In addition, this position is responsible for all activity within the department with emphasis on patient service, but including supervision of tray line, cafeteria service and stocking of patient floors with all food service staff on duty. Supervisor may also be responsible for food safety compliance, inventory and managing floor stock in patient care kitchens, refrigerators. This position will also have the responsibility of supervising the entire department on weekends and holidays. The supervisor is responsible for researching, testing and developing new recipes/new menus in conjunction with the cooks. They oversee food production meets budgetary requirements as well as meets health, sanitation and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise kitchen and cafeteria staff, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality operations.  
  • Oversee patient tray service, nourishment delivery, cafeteria service, and catering events.  
  • Ensure accurate meal delivery, proper portioning, and compliance with sanitation, food safety, and regulatory standards.  
  • Coordinate all department activities, workflow, and shift coverage while balancing resources to meet priorities.  
  • Manage kitchen equipment, maintenance, safe operation, and inventory, including patient floor stock.  
  • Develop, standardize, and evaluate recipes; provide input on patient and retail menus, pricing, and new food products.  
  • Monitor and control labor, food, and operational budgets in collaboration with management.  
  • Recruit, train, orient, evaluate, and discipline staff; provide ongoing feedback, recognition, and cross-training.  
  • Lead staff in sanitation, safe food handling, and operational procedures to ensure patient safety and compliance.  
  • Handle HR, labor relations, risk management, and departmental safety issues.  
  • Identify, recommend, and implement improvements to service, productivity, quality, and financial performance.  

Qualifications

Education:  

  • High School diploma or equivalent of approved technical college courses; and/or experience in the field required. 
  • Preferred: Associate or Bachelor degree in culinary arts, foodservice management or dietetics. 

Experience:  

  • 2+ years of food service experience required.  
  • 1+ year of supervisory or lead role experience required.  
  • Preferred: hospital food service experience 

License(s)/Certification(s):  

  • ServSafe Certification required within 1 year of hire
  • Food Handler 
  • Food Production Manager 
  • IA/IL Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within ninety days of hire. 
  • IA/IL Adult Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within ninety days of hire.
