Overview

The Pre Commissioning Unit Local Area Network (PCULAN) team is seeking a network engineer to support and advance the network infrastructure while supporting an enhanced security posture.

 

The engineer in this role will be responsible for testing and implementing patches on network systems such as switches, routers, firewalls, and email gateways. They will work closely with the Network Architect to ensure the network is secure and that all devices are maintained in a hardened state. This role also requires clear and effective communication of network issues to relevant stakeholders, supporting strong working relationships and reinforcing our commitment to deliver reliable support to the Navy. Additionally, the engineer will collaborate with the System Infrastructure and System Security teams to assist with implementations and troubleshooting activities.

 

This position is 100% on-site with limited expectations for travel.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Test and implement patches on network systems i.e. switches, routers, firewalls
  • Assist with identifying and resolving networking issues
  • Support the Network Architect with testing and planning for new projects
  • Collaborate with the Security team to ensure compliance
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all network-related issues.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • 2+ years of networking experience
  • 2+ years of experience working with server infrastructure
  • 1+ years of experience working on system hardening
  • Current active Secret security clearance is required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain final DoD Top-Secret clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CompTIA Security + certification

  • Experience working with Cisco networking systems
  • Experience with virtual networking appliances
  • Experience working with VMware infrastructure
  • Experience working with Cisco networking systems

Skills

  • Hands‑on experience with Cisco IOS, NX‑OS, and FTD/FMC, including configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization in complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, VLANs, subnetting, routing, and the OSI model, applied across both design and operations.
  • Skilled with industry‑standard troubleshooting tools (Wireshark, cable testers).
  • Preferred experience with Cisco ISE, including wired 802.1X troubleshooting, policy validation, and endpoint onboarding.
  • Intermediate understanding of DNS (public/private) and its impact on email flow, SMTP routing, and domain integrity.
  • Preferred scripting and automation experience with tools like Ansible or Cisco Catalyst Center to streamline network configuration and operations.
  • Experience with fiber optic cabling, including installation best practices, patching, and basic optical troubleshooting.
