Position Summary

Carver Companies is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Licensed Engineer to join our marine team aboard tugboats operating in the New York Harbor. This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all onboard mechanical and electrical systems. The ideal candidate will hold a valid U.S. Coast Guard Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) 4000 HP license and have hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting marine propulsion and auxiliary systems in a dynamic, fast-paced harbor environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems aboard the vessel.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on engines, generators, pumps, and other onboard systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, engine logs, and fuel usage.
  • Ensure all engineering operations comply with U.S. Coast Guard and environmental regulations.
  • Monitor critical systems and respond promptly to mechanical or technical issues.
  • Work closely with the Captain and crew to support safe vessel operations.
  • Manage inventory and requisition parts, supplies, and tools as needed.
  • Participate in safety drills and emergency response procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard DDE 4000 HP license (minimum required).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a marine engineering role aboard tugboats or similar vessels.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, and marine machinery.
  • Familiarity with fuel systems, HVAC, steering, and bilge systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance procedures.
  • TWIC card and current Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in the New York Harbor or similar high-traffic marine environments.
  • Familiarity with EPA Tier-compliant engines and modern marine control systems.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically fit to work in confined engine spaces and onboard marine vessels.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and perform hands-on mechanical work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
