Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician II position in the Division 9 Project Development, Division Design/Construct (DDC) unit located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Position will be responsible for conducting field surveys and mapping in a DDC office. Duties will involve surveying, data collection, and mapping for division managed projects of varying scope and size. Position will be responsible for data management, integrating data into design files, property reconnaissance and field ties, as well as computing property information as needed for determining R/W impacts. Responsibilities also include all aspects of route location surveys, designing horizontal and vertical alignments, construction surveys, and development and analysis of three-dimensional surface models.

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe shoes required. The selected candidate must have the ability to respond to the public, local government agencies, Raleigh-based staff and private engineering firms regarding the status and design aspects of highway projects within the Division. Candidate must have experience performing highway construction stakeout. Must possess a working knowledge of field surveying procedures and be proficient with robotic instruments, data collection and GPS. Also, must be proficient with various computer applications including Microsoft Office, and drafting software. Candidate must have the ability to budget time and coordinate schedules with others. Candidate must be able to transverse steep and uneven terrain. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, hearing and standing. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle preferred. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC 11 $45,431- $79,504

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience using surveying equipment, instruments, levels, data collectors and GPS
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software
  • Experience in performing highway construction stakeouts

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
