Position Overview

The yard spotter operates a specialized terminal tractor to quickly move, position, and park semi-trailers around a warehouse or distribution center yard. (S)he maximizes facility efficiency by keeping loading docks clear and ensuring trailers are perfectly aligned for loading and unloading of product.

Key Responsibilities

The yard spotter shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Maneuver loaded and empty trailers to and from loading docks, staging areas, and parking zones.
  • Closely coordinates with warehouse personnel to schedule trailer movements, secure trailer doors, and maintain an organized yard. 
  • Maintain clear communication with the team, report yard issues, and provide shift change briefings
  • Maintain accurate records of trailer movements and report any damage or issues
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment, including checking fluid

levels, lights, and tires.

  • Organize the lot, track trailer locations, and maintain an even flow of traffic to avoid congestion.
  • Ensure trailers are safely chocked, secured, and properly backed into tight dock doors.
  • Follow all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules on private property.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • The applicant must be 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).

  • Practice safe driving and adherence to all post speed limits.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, wind, etc.
  • Frequent getting in and out of the cab, climbing, and occasional lifting up to 50lbs.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays.
