Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm, with some evenings and weekends

The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (H-NNCSB) is seeking a Prevention Specialist to join our team and help strengthen the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities throughout Hampton and Newport News.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys community engagement, public education, collaboration, and making a measurable difference. You will develop and deliver evidence-based prevention and mental health promotion programs for youth and adults while working with community partners to address substance use and other behavioral health concerns.

You'll have the opportunity to facilitate programs such as Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, and trauma and resilience education, while also supporting community strategies addressing underage drinking, tobacco use, opioid misuse, and other substance-related concerns.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field, such as Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in mental health promotion and group facilitation.

What You'll Do

As a Prevention Specialist, you will:

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement evidence-based substance use prevention and mental health promotion programs.
  • Deliver educational presentations and interactive programs for youth, adults, families, schools, and community organizations.
  • Facilitate programs such as Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, and trauma/resilience initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, coalitions, schools, organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide consultation, technical assistance, and support to community coalitions and prevention partners.
  • Support environmental prevention strategies, including Counter-Tools initiatives.
  • Conduct tobacco and alcohol retailer store audits and provide education to retailers.
  • Address prevention priorities such as underage drinking, tobacco use, opioid misuse, and other substance-related concerns.
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze program and outcome information.
  • Enter required program data and outputs into the DBHDS Data System.
  • Prepare educational materials, presentations, reports, and other program resources.
  • Participate in community events, meetings, trainings, and prevention activities.
  • Monitor program activities and outcomes to ensure initiatives are implemented consistently and according to program requirements.
