The Town of Hanover Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Out of School Time Program Specialist to help deliver engaging programs for youth and preschool-aged children. This role combines outdoor education, recreation, and youth development—helping children explore, learn, and grow through hands-on activities and structured programming in a safe and supportive environment.Â

This position performs specialized duties related to the department’s Out of School Time programs, including coordinating youth and preschool programming and supporting structured outdoor education and recreational activities.Â
Successful performance contributes to the delivery of high-quality programs that support youth development and enhance the quality of life for families in the Hanover community.Â
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesÂ
- Coordinate youth and preschool programming, including structured outdoor education and recreational activitiesÂ
- Develop curriculum and thematic lesson plans for program participantsÂ
- Coordinate the safe arrival and departure of children from program activitiesÂ
- Ensure all activities comply with departmental safety policies and proceduresÂ
- Coordinate the use, maintenance, and storage of outdoor sports and recreation equipmentÂ
- Communicate program policies, schedules, and expectations with parents and guardiansÂ
- Respond to and resolve program concerns or issuesÂ
- Support the overall operation and success of Out of School Time programsÂ
- Perform related duties as assignedÂ
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesÂ
- Knowledge of principles and practices of children’s recreational programmingÂ
- Knowledge of relevant Town and departmental policies and proceduresÂ
- Skill in planning and organizing age-appropriate outdoor educational and recreational activitiesÂ
- Skill in building positive relationships with children, families, and colleaguesÂ
- Strong interpersonal and communication skillsÂ
- Ability to model a positive attitude and collaborative work styleÂ
- Skill in written communication and basic computer applicationsÂ

Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentÂ
- Work involves intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stoopingÂ
- Frequent lifting of light objects and occasional lifting of heavier equipmentÂ
- Work performed in both indoor and outdoor settingsÂ
- Outdoor work may occur in cold or inclement weatherÂ
Minimum QualificationsÂ
- High school diploma or equivalentÂ
- One to two years of relevant experience working with youth programming, which may include internships or apprenticeshipsÂ
- Background or demonstrated experience in outdoor educational or recreational programming for school-age childrenÂ
- Basic writing and computational skillsÂ
Hours of Work:Â Â
- The standard workday and workweek for OST Staff varies depending on time of year.Â
- KAST: Monday – Friday 9:15am - 5:45pm.Â
i.    When not scheduled program responsibilities the standard workday is 8:15am - 4:45pm.Â
- When Camps are running the OST schedule isÂ
i.    Monday – Friday 4 days per week: 8:00am - 5:00pmÂ
                                        ii.    1 day per week: 8am - 2:30pm. Short day rotates among OST Staff.Â
