NOTE:
This hybrid position is based at our headquarters in downtown Portland, Oregon. Candidates must reside within commuting distance of the office or be willing to relocate to the Portland metropolitan area. Employees are required to work onsite Tuesdays through Thursdays each week, with remote work flexibility on Mondays and Fridays, subject to business needs. This schedule supports collaboration, connection, and team engagement while providing flexibility for focused remote work.
Position Summary:
As a senior accounting analyst, you will be part of a high-performing and collaborative team responsible for accurate accounting and reporting of significant financial transactions. This role supports accounting and reporting for NW Natural's investments in natural gas reserves, natural gas storage facilities, and regulatory accounting and reporting.
Your general responsibilities include journal entries, report preparation and analysis, forecasting, and presentation of results to management and other departments. You will serve as the accounting department's primary contact for these subject areas and as a technical resource for internal and external stakeholders.
This is an opportunity to draw on your strong accounting and analytical experience and financial modeling skillset to both ensure accuracy and make process improvements over time.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
General Tasks
- Contributes to a strong team environment.
- Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned, to support departmental objectives.
- Supports NW Natural’s commitment to a culture of safe work practices.
- Participates in month-end close by recording journal entries and accruals for segment activity
- Analyzes results against budget and prior periods and provides variance analysis to management.
- Prepares account reconciliations and performs SOX controls to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Compiles specific information for the Company’s SEC financial statement disclosures.
- Provides support for both internal and external audits
- Identify and implement process improvements
Gas Reserves Accounting
- Manages the monthly gas reserves accounting process, working regularly with a joint venture partner to obtain and record relevant transactions.
- Functions as the primary contact for an annual audit of the investment.
- Supports an annual reserve study and incorporates study results in annual forecasts.
- Prepares materials for monthly management and periodic subsidiary board meetings.
Gas Storage Facility Accounting
- Prepares and presents monthly reporting packages to management, including reviewing and interpreting information from multiple departments.
- Partners with the Rates team to develop annual forecasts and budgets
- Serves as a subject matter expert for storage accounting and provides recommendations and guidance
Regulatory Accounting and Reporting
- Supports state regulatory filings and strategies in conjunction with accounting leadership and the Regulatory Affairs team, including preparation and coordination of accounting information for rate case filings and data requests
- Coordinates the preparation of the annual FERC Form 2 filings and other regulatory filings for state utility commissions
- Assists in implementing new regulatory accounting guidance in day-to-day activities
Qualifications:
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
- CPA License preferred
Experience
- Minimum five years of accounting experience, preferably in the utility or another regulated industry
- Analyzing and applying GAAP in a complex business environment
- Supporting regulatory accounting and reporting activities preferred
- Financial reporting and analysis
Technical Skills
- SAP experience strongly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft office proficiency, with focus on excel
- Experience researching and documenting accounting matters.

Base salary range:$98,450.00 - $140,300.00 per year, depending on qualifications
Annual Target Incentive: Level 3, 9.5% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% – 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
