Overview

The Highlands is seeking a motivated and passionate Competition Services Manager to lead the successful execution of on-hill competitions and seasonal events. This part-time, seasonal role is responsible for competition setup and cleanup, leading the on-hill crew, coordinating operational needs across departments, and making quick decisions in a fast-paced mountain environment.

This position will also build a strong partnership with Team Boyne to support the growth and development of athletes throughout Northern Michigan.

Reporting to the Director of Snowsports, the Competition Services Manager will develop team member training programs, implement effective operating procedures, and continuously look for ways to improve the competition experience for athletes, coaches, families, and guests.

Responsibilities

The Competition Services Manager leads The Highlands Competition Services Team and serves as a key liaison between Competition Services, Mountain Operations, Marketing, Events, and other resort departments.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute competitions and race programs, including Adult Race League, NASTAR, third-party training, and race lane rentals.
  • Oversee all event logistics from planning through completion, including registrations, permits, certifications, liability forms, contracts, sanctioning agreements, staffing, marketing, and operational needs.
  • Coordinate race locations, course setup, training areas, event arenas, and pre- and post-event operations to ensure venues are safe, properly prepared, and maintained.
  • Manage, operate, and maintain race timing systems, software, and competition equipment, including safe transportation and storage.
  • Hire, train, schedule, motivate, and direct race event staff to ensure competitions and events are properly staffed and executed.
  • Work closely with race organizers, Ski Patrol, Lift Operations, Mountain Operations, and resort leadership to establish and enforce procedures, rules, safety standards, and operational guidelines.
  • Promote safety and risk management while maintaining compliance with trail homologations and applicable competition requirements.
  • Develop and maintain departmental operating plans, staffing practices, procedures, and resource management standards to support efficient event operations.
  • Build strong relationships with race organizations and Team Boyne to support athlete development and the growth of competitive skiing and snowboarding in Northern Michigan.
  • Provide exceptional guest service and represent The Highlands with a positive, professional, and welcoming attitude.
  • Maintain organized and professional work areas and support overall resort operations and additional events or duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience on a race crew, preferably in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Previous experience organizing and executing race events preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with NASTAR Live Timing preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to ski for up to 8 hours per day in varying terrain and conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Comfortable performing physical labor and working outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work safely in challenging winter conditions, including cold, snow, wind, rain, sleet, ice, low visibility, powder, hardpack, slush, and other variable conditions.
  • Part-time seasonal position with a primarily outdoor work environment.
