Day in the Life of a Substance Abuse Counselor

  • Provides individual counseling to highly complex patients
  • Conducts clinical assessments to appropriately assess patient’s treatment needs
  • Designs and updates the patient’s treatment plan, including  care coordination, referrals, and discharge planning
  • Manages assigned caseload and compliance with clinical treatment requirements
  • Collaborates with nurses and providers to provide holistic treatment services
  • Facilitates urine drug screening for patients

Clinic Schedule:

Expected hours for this role are 23-29 hours per week.

  • Monday: 11:00 am-1:30 pm (Winchester) & 4:00 pm-6:00 pm (Harrisonburg)

  • Tuesday: 12:30-6:30 (Winchester)

  • Wednesday: 11:00 am-4:00 pm (Harrisonburg)

  • Thursday: 9:00 am-12:00 pm (Winchester)

  • Friday: 12:30 pm-5:30 pm (Harrisonburg)

Position Requirements:

The most qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Must hold a Resident in Counseling, LPC, LSATP or LCSW, CSAC License in the state of Virginia.
  • Must have at least one year of experience as a substance abuse counselor.
  • Experience treating opioid-addicted patients is not a requirement but is preferred.
  • No legal impediments to serving in a licensed opiate treatment program.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • If recovering, three years of continuous verifiable abstinence is required.
