POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Wellness Director, the Personal Trainer will be responsible for designing, collaborating and implementing exercise programs on an individual basis according to the needs and goals of the member.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Warmly and enthusiastically greet members with a smile and eye contact.
  2. Consult with the member on the health and fitness goals and objectives for an exercise program. Design exercise program based on the goals and objectives identified and the member preferences and weaknesses as shown in the fitness assessment results.
  3. Ensure programs must include all aspects of fitness, follow proper exercise progression and comply with the philosophy and goals of the YMCA.
  4. Schedule appointments with members.
  5. Ensure members must know that they will be charged for any session missed where the trainer was not given ample notice and showed up for the appointment.
  6. Report equipment in need of repair to supervisor immediately, follow branch repair procedures and post “out of order” sign on equipment. Follow proper paperwork procedures by keeping all paperwork on site such as assessments, workout session cards etc. in an assigned designated area.
  7. Maintain sale goals provided by Wellness Director.
  8. Arrive for appointments well-groomed and in proper uniform. Staff shirt clean, pressed and tucked in; no tights, hats, excessive jewelry, or perfume, nametags worn.
  9. Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
  10. Participate in the Y mission by supporting 1 or more major events and by supporting the Annual Campaign.
  11. Follow the YMCA of Greater Hartford training manual.
  12. Follow Wellness Floor or Pool expectations when not scheduled for personal training, group training, or performing a consultation.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Personal Trainer Certification through a nationally accredited organization including, but not limited to NETA, NASM, ACE, ACSM, AEA. Must hold an Aqua Specialty Certification if personal training is to be done in the pool. 
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention 
  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught and/or ability to demonstrate the movements and exercises. 
  • Demonstrates customer services skills and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrates ability to lead an individual/group and motivate others to achieve their health and wellbeing goals. 
  • Demonstrates ability working with all age groups and ability levels. 
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations. 
  • Degree in health and science or related field. 
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in the health and fitness field

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lead sessions and classes, demonstrating exercise techniques and perform associated physical activities. 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
