Our laboratory team is a close-knit group that takes pride in delivering reliable, timely diagnostic testing to support patient care throughout the hospital. In our rural setting, teamwork and collaboration are essential as we work together to serve both inpatient and outpatient needs.

How you’ll contribute

A Phlebotomist who excels in this role:

  • Must work closely with all laboratory staff regarding collection, receipt and processing of specimens.

  • Courteous and professional interaction with our patients, physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel using our CARING values.

  • Responsible for the proper collection of specimens in a manner consistent with laboratory procedures, safe practices and patient comfort. 

  • Follows all hospital guidelines regarding Standard Precautions (ex. PPE, gloving, hand washing, etc.).

  • Selects the appropriate specimen collection devices (ex. tubes, proper additives, etc. in order to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture according to the Laboratory’s Specimen Collection manual.

  • Accurately interprets collection lists. For the outpatient setting, proper interpretation of physician orders.

  • Must identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens accurately at bedside.

  • Adequate inventory of necessary phlebotomy supplies should be maintained and baskets and draw areas should be kept clean, neat and orderly. 

  • Maintains section supplies by performing an inventory on a weekly basis.

  • Any worn or malfunctioning equipment must be removed from service. 

  • The manager must be informed of this action.

  • Proper training of phlebotomists, staff, and students in the techniques of computer entry, venipuncture and capillary puncture is required. 

  • Performs clerical duties such as checking orders, filing, and retrieving, faxing and copying written reports.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge of operation of office equipment such as fax, copier, computer and various printers.

  •  Responds to STATS, code activations, and out-patient alert (buzzer) within a timely manner.

  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient/employee information.

  • Provide appropriate care to patients of all ages (neonates to geriatrics). 

  • Rotates all shifts according to schedule.
