Custodian
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment throughout the facility during daily operations. This position performs routine housekeeping and floor maintenance in production, warehouse, office, and common areas by removing debris, managing spills, maintaining walkways, and supporting a safe working environment. The Custodian follows all food safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and safety requirements while helping ensure the facility remains clean and organized throughout the shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Housekeeping
- Clean and maintain offices, break rooms, locker rooms, restrooms, hallways, conference rooms, and other common areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and sanitize floors, walls, windows, and surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste in designated areas.
- Replenish restroom and breakroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.
- Clean doors, glass, furniture, fixtures, and other frequently touched surfaces.
- Maintain assigned work areas in a clean, organized, and presentable condition throughout the shift.
Floor Care
- Maintain clean, safe, and dry floors throughout assigned work areas.
- In production areas, continuously remove pasta, debris, and excess water from the floor during production to maintain a safe work environment and support Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Use squeegees, brooms, mops, and other approved cleaning tools to keep floors clean and direct water toward designated drains.
- Sweep, mop, and maintain floors in office, break rooms, locker rooms, hallways, and other common areas.
- Promptly respond to spills and place appropriate caution signage to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
- Monitor floor conditions throughout the shift and report drainage issues, damaged flooring, or other safety hazards to management.
Sanitation & Safety
- Follow all company sanitation procedures, food safety standards, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Safely use and store cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Maintain proper chemical labeling and storage.
- Report safety hazards, facility maintenance concerns, or damaged equipment promptly.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with all company safety policies.
Waste Management
- Collect and dispose of trash, recyclables, and other waste materials.
- Maintain indoor and outdoor waste collection areas in a clean and organized condition.
- Ensure waste containers are emptied regularly and remain clean and accessible.
Equipment & Supply Management
- Properly use and maintain custodial tools and cleaning equipment.
- Notify management when cleaning supplies need replenishment or equipment requires repair.
- Maintain organized custodial closets and supply storage areas.
General Support
- Assist with facility setup and cleanup for meetings or company events as needed.
- Support periodic cleaning projects and facility housekeeping initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
- Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience in a food manufacturing or industrial environment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of general cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safe chemical handling.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe workplace.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and climb stairs throughout the shift.
- Regularly lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive cleaning tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work around cleaning chemicals while wearing required PPE.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and manufacturing environments.
Work Environment
- Food manufacturing, warehouse, office, and common area environments.
- Exposure to water, cleaning chemicals, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Requires adherence to all food safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), sanitation, and safety policies.
