4x10 hour shifts starting from 0700-1730, rotating weekday call and alternating weekend call shifts.

JOB SUMMARY

 

The Surgical Technician Lead (STL) works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The STL assists in the circulating role as needed, The STL collaborates with the Sterile Processing Department to maintain instruments and specialty trays needs to meet required inventory and working orders. Oversees surgical technician’s assignments and provides direction and guidance. Provides performance documentation to supervisor/manager. Assumes department leadership in absence of supervisor. Reviews the surgical schedule and service line shift report daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures. Serves as the patient experience representative for the Operating Room, Performs and oversees precepting of surgical technologists. In coordination with the Charge RN ensures the accuracy of surgeon preference cards and updates accordingly. Serves as content expert for managing physician preferences and enhancing surgeon engagement and satisfaction with surgical operations, providing training and education for surgical staff and surgeons on the use of equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.

Experience:

Must have 3 years of surgical technologist experience, prefer 5 years Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

 

  •  
    • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code §54.1-2956.12.
    • Must hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board-approved pathway (military training, DOL-registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
    • Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.

 

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic understanding of medical terminology and computer skills. Ability to communicate with other team members in a manner that promotes collaboration and engagement. Ability to coordinate schedules to ensure adequate coverage to meet needs. Experience with precepting/training/orienting new technologists.

    • Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Demand Code:

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment. The base compensation range for this role is $29.22- $49.35 hourly.

 

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
