Summary Of the Role

This is a senior role for someone who moves fluidly between analytics and systems, and who wants to own and evolve the intelligence layer that tells a team what's actually working.

HHMI's Marketing and Digital Communications team shapes how the Institute's research, programs, and opportunities reach the scientists, students, educators, and grantees who rely on them, as well as the general public. That work runs across web, email, social, paid media, and in-person channels. The team is currently standing up a CRM and CDP and foundational analytics infrastructure to track performance across those channels — what's missing is the person who takes that foundation, runs it day to day, and pushes it further: deeper visibility into how audiences move between channels, and sharper insight into how content and strategy decisions are paying off.

This role will become the long-term business owner of that ecosystem, with clear responsibility for its roadmap, governance, adoption, and continued development in partnership with colleagues across Marketing and Digital Communications and Technology.

The core mandate is to own and evolve that ecosystem so it becomes more useful over time. That means administering and evolving the CRM/CDP, deepening the cross-channel measurement architecture, governing UTM taxonomy and analytics configuration, tracking search and AI visibility, and building the audience segmentation and dashboards that keep the full team oriented. You work in close partnership with the Director, the Content and Digital Experience Senior Manager, the Marketing Manager, and Technology colleagues, turning what the data shows into decisions the team can act on.

This is not a pure analytics role or a pure systems role. It takes real comfort operating on both sides at once: administering and extending systems, and translating what they show into action.

What You Will Actually Do

  • Own and evolve the analytics infrastructure. Administer and continuously improve HHMI's digital analytics, including conversion event tracking, journey dashboards, and UTM taxonomy governance. Extend what's been built — this is clear ownership, with the authority to establish shared standards in partnership with the teams that use them.

  • Deepen the cross-channel measurement architecture. Build on the existing cross-channel measurement and event-tracking setup to sharpen the single view of how audiences move across web, email, social, paid media, and events together. Find the handoffs, the drop-off points, and the channels that are over- or under-used relative to what audiences actually need, and use that to steer where investment and content strategy go next.

  • Build search and AI visibility. Develop and manage the program that monitors how HHMI and its programs show up across traditional search and AI platforms. Analyze the findings to spot patterns, opportunities, and risks, and flag shifts that change what the team should do about content and experience.

  • Administer and grow the CRM and CDP. Serve as primary day-to-day administrator of HHMI's CRM and CDP, extending the data model and identity resolution as new use cases emerge and managing integration patterns that tie the platform to the rest of the stack. Partner with the Marketing Manager on list architecture, segmentation, intake forms, and data governance.

  • Govern the integration architecture. Partner with HHMI's Technology team to keep CRM, CDP, analytics, email, and the website connected as one coherent, well-governed stack, with clean data flowing between systems by design rather than held together by manual exports.

  • Build measurement into the website redesign. Serve as the measurement and discoverability lead inside HHMI's ongoing website redesign, so tracking, attribution, and AI discoverability stay built into the foundation as it evolves.

  • Run email as real infrastructure. Own email-platform operations, audience architecture, attribution, list management, and CRM integration, partnering with the Marketing Manager on campaign and content strategy.

  • Build the reporting the team runs on. Give the full team a clear view of how audiences find and move through HHMI's channels, including meaningful comparisons of paid and organic performance across sources. Present findings regularly and translate them into plain insight for non-technical people.

  • Grow the audience modeling. As the CRM and analytics mature, build the segmentation models that reflect how different groups find, evaluate, and act on HHMI opportunities. Audit the behavioral data HHMI already has, and extend the collection infrastructure that future audience modeling will require, with appropriate attention to privacy, consent, and responsible data use.

What Success Looks Like in the First Year

During the first year, this person will establish clear governance for the CRM/CDP; create a trusted cross-channel measurement framework; give the team usable audience and performance dashboards; and develop a roadmap for segmentation, integrations, and search and AI visibility.

What We’re Looking For

  • Both sides of the house. Brings five or more years of senior, relevant experience across marketing technology, marketing operations, or digital analytics, with hands-on ownership of a CRM and/or CDP — administering it, extending it, and using it to answer real business questions, not just keeping it running.

  • Turns insight into action. Identifies which measures matter, explains why, and helps the team act on them.

  • Comfortable owning and extending systems. Has run and grown a CRM/CDP platform, adding use cases, integrations, and segmentation over time. Prior experience on an initial implementation is a plus, but not a requirement.

  • Thinks in systems. Data models, integration patterns, identity resolution, and governance are how this role approaches a problem. Builds for maintainability, not one-off fixes.

  • Experience with search is a plus. Experience with SEO, search-performance analysis, answer-engine optimization, or other forms of AI-visibility measurement is helpful but not required.

  • Tagging is second nature. UTM taxonomy, campaign tracking, and pixel tracking (Meta Pixel, Reddit Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag) are familiar ground. This role can independently establish sound tagging, consent-management, privacy, and data-governance practices.

  • Fluent across audiences. Works across content, marketing, and technology teams, driving standards and change across groups not directly managed, and can explain a data finding to a non-technical stakeholder without losing the substance.

  • Helpful additional experience. An initial CRM/CDP implementation, website redesign, SQL or comparable query tools, API integrations, or search and AI-visibility measurement are helpful but not required.

How This Role Is Positioned

This is a hybrid marketing-technology and analytics role. Success requires both hands-on platform ownership and the ability to translate data into decisions; it is neither a reporting-only position nor a traditional systems-administration role.
