General Summary:

The Software Engineer – BI is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and management of DART’s data analysis and reporting solutions. This role acts as a technical bridge between raw data and actionable insights. The ideal candidate has a track record of ensuring the health and performance of enterprise grade reporting ecosystems. Key areas of responsibility include developing sophisticated dashboards in Tableau and Power BI and leveraging Python and SQL for advanced data discovery and analytics. The position requires a consultant-mindset to partner with stakeholders and a "discovery" approach to database exploration. The candidate is also expected to own the technical rigor to perform independent data analysis and reporting under minimal supervision, in accordance with DART’s Data Governance protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains and supports end user utilization of internal reporting applications including Tableau, Power BI, Crystal (Ripplestone) and Cognos BI Analytics.
  • Utilize Python to build robust scripts that identify trends, patterns, anomalies, and correlations, transforming raw datasets into a deeper understanding of operational performance.
  • Writes complex SQL queries to extract data from relational databases.
  • Manages report inventory, batch jobs, data refresh definitions to support timely and accurate reporting.
  • Adheres to all of DART’s Data Governance and Security tenets and ensures that end user analysts do the same.
  • Assists end users with report definition, authoring, publishing, and access management.
  • Coordinates with ETL environments to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all reporting environments.
  • Recommends and performs updates to reporting environment software packages and components.
  • Collects requirements for new reports and for modifications to existing reports.
  • Responsible for customer (external) and client (internal) support services as they relate to data fidelity, availability and reporting environments. Provide 5-star customer service and meet Agency service level agreements (SLA).
  • Coordinate with Systems Engineering to validate reporting environment applications after routine Windows security patching activities.
  • Analyzes data and report access problems and resolves all incidents and service requests associated with the Agency reporting environment.
  • Actively participate in knowledge sharing and cross training to ensure that the division has a backup for all essential tasks and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience in Python Programming, Tableau, and Power BI, as well as Oracle and SQL Server in UNIX, Linux, Windows or related operating environment.
  • Knowledge of modern data modeling techniques.
  • Knowledge of SQL code origination and management tools.
  • Must be able to work in an on-call rotation and variable hours, including emergency response to outages.
  • Pass a physical (medical) examination that includes a drug screen in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  • Ability to meet time sensitive expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to pick up technical skills quickly.
  • Ability to use time effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to use rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult data problems with effective solutions.
  • Ability to communicate and get messages across clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to quickly find common ground and solve problems for the good of all.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting DART's operating facilities, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
