We are seeking a collaborative, product-oriented technical colleague to join our team. This new role will lead operations and help shape direction for the division’s suite of well-received public data products. Your prior real-world experience will add to the team’s overall capacity through peer review, coaching, and your own individual contributions on select data product features. You’ll also manage the technical and operational aspects of primary data collection efforts and apply your quantitative skills to contribute to analytical projects using a variety of external datasets.

This position requires a regular on-site presence in Minneapolis, MN or Helena, MT. 

Core Responsibilities:

Manages operations of and updates to CDE data products

  • Following data product direction set by Executive Sponsors and Data Director, oversees code review process for updates and new products

  • Maintains awareness of data-related procurement and subscription cycles, which are managed by CDE Operations

  • Coaches colleagues through peer review

With supervision from the Data Director and in consultation with subject matter experts, designs and releases new and revised CDE data products and features

Manages the technical and operational aspects of CDE survey implementation  

  • Leads data validation, reconciling internal and external input into survey instruments

  • Executes report-back data products

  • Oversees technical infrastructure for securely obtaining, housing, and analyzing survey responses, coordinating with IT, Information Security, and Legal as needed 

  • Supports Data Director and other CDE leadership in formulating overall vision and strategy for survey work

As resources permit, participates as an individual contributor on additional analytical projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative subject such as computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, physics, engineering, or degree in another subject such as finance, economics or relevant quantitative background. Master's or PhD preferred.

  • Specific rationale for choosing CDE

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in team-based technical work; self-directed learning and problem-solving; and teaching or coaching others

  • Appropriate baseline proficiency with CDE’s core technical tools: R (strong) and Git (strong)

  • Substantial experience giving, receiving, and implementing code feedback in production environments in multiple organizations

  • Strong attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Content knowledge in one or more of CDE’s topical areas, particularly in the context of low- and moderate-income communities and/or Indian Country: economic development and/or business dynamics; labor market policies; housing affordability; and/or access to credit

  • Formalized project management experience (e.g., sprint planning and/or tools like Jira)

  • Experience in a variety of organization types

  • Experience in private-sector production environments

  • Experience fielding surveys

  • Additional relevant technical skills, such as substantial experience with GitLab and/or conversance in additional programming languages

Salary & Benefits:​

The full salary range for MPLS is $95,100 - $118,899 - $142,700.

The full salary range for Helena is $85,600 - $107,009 - $128,400
