JOB SUMMARY (overview of job): The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs specimen collection on patients of all ages served by the hospital.  In addition, he or she also uses the laboratory information system to document specimen collection information, order testing, and determine medical necessity.   The Phlebotomist may also transport specimens to testing areas and assess samples for appropriate labeling and acceptability.  The Phlebotomist will provide detailed and complete collection instructions to patient customers for specimens to be collected by the patient.

  • Exceptional customer service, including telephone etiquette and communication skills regardless of situation encountered.
  • Organizational skills to deliver optimum patient care. 
  • Judgment regarding patient specimen collection and be able to function independently.
  • Flexibility in work flow and location.
  • Teamwork aptitude to deliver quality care. 
  • Empathy and keen need to create excellent patient satisfaction.
  • KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED preferred.  Clinical knowledge of physiology and anatomy preferred. Previous experience as a clinical phlebotomist preferred. 

EDUCATION:  Training in an accredited program of phlebotomy preferred.  College credit hours in clinically relevant education such as medical technology, anatomy, or patient care focused courses preferred. 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: CPT certification preferred
