JOB SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs specimen collection on patients of all ages served by the hospital.  In addition, he or she also uses the laboratory information system to document specimen collection information, order testing, and determine medical necessity.   The Phlebotomist may also transport specimens to testing areas and assess samples for appropriate labeling and acceptability.  The Phlebotomist will provide detailed and complete collection instructions to patient customers for specimens to be collected by the patient.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 

High school diploma or GED preferred.  Clinical knowledge of physiology and anatomy preferred.  Previous experience as a clinical phlebotomist preferred.

EDUCATION:  

Training in an accredited program of phlebotomy preferred.  College credit hours in clinically relevant education such as medical technology, anatomy, or patient care focused courses preferred.  

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: 

ASCP Phlebotomist certification preferred.

Phlebotomist Responsibilities:
•    Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of St Peter’s Hospital and the Laboratory department/service.
•    Accessions samples according to established policies and procedures.
•    Assists with inventory management including stocking, ordering and monitoring to ensure adequate supplies to meet business needs within the assigned section of the laboratory.
•    Provides administrative/clerical support for the departments including maintaining accurate record systems, quality control data, patient results, and workflow documentation.
•    Answers multi-line telephones and responds to the majority of all incoming calls before transferring to alternate resources. Responds to questions from patients, physicians and other reference labs and provides routine information, collection and testing procedures, specimen processing, turnaround times, result reporting and reference lab availability.  Also responds to non-routine questions regarding what steps need to be taken to rectify a situation when the integrity of a sample/specimen has been compromised.
•    Facilitates result reporting through appropriate electronic documentation.
•    Monitors all systems for incoming orders.    Responsible for ensuring devices are maintained in good working order due to the critical nature of information being received.  Acts as a resource in resolving printer related function problems, maintenance and form loading.
•    Responsible for checking and verifying the integrity/quality of the specimens to ensure appropriate specimen volumes, packaging, etc.   Assumes responsibility for initiating follow-up action necessary to prevent and/or resolve problem scenarios and coordinates as appropriate with other departments, management, etc.
•    Receives specimens from the laboratory runners, phlebotomy staff, pneumatic tube system and external clients.  
•    Acts as a resource to other ancillary staff responding to procedural questions and assisting with problem resolution within scope of practice, appropriate specimen handling and processing for mail outs, processing, receiving, order entry, and the handling of reference specimens.
•    Participates in and assists with additional levels of responsibilities for special projects and/or delegated tasks.
•    Responds to procedural questions and assists with problem solving.
•    Participates in regular staff meetings to discuss, identify and resolve any issues or concerns that may arise.
•    Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.  Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments relevant to job performance.
•    Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.
•    Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
