POSITION SUMMARY

DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the Director of Patient Access, the Financial Specialist is responsible for the assessment of all self-pay patients receiving Inpatient, Observation, or Emergency care for the ability to pay. The Financial Specialist must use sound judgment and decision-making skills to ensure all options for resolving open patient balances have been pursued prior to the patient’s discharge. In addition the Financial Specialist will counsel patients with respect to hospital financial matters, requesting and collecting payments identified as patient liabilities, as well as assist the patient in making appropriate payment arrangements.

CLASS CHARATERISTICS

Incumbent in this class must have strong customer service and problem solving skills in order to work independently and maintain a positive attitude in a fast paced office environment in order to deal effectively with challenging patients and families in complex situations.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:

Experience:

Minimum One year of previous collection experience in a hospital or medical office required.

Position REQUIRES weekends and possible Holidays

Education:

Completion of high school or equivalent.


KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Principles of computer control systems and modern office methods

Basic concepts of admitting, billing and collection language and procedures.

Fundamentals of key-disk data entry systems.

Comprehensive knowledge of State and Federal agency regulations.

Comprehensive knowledge of EMTALA rules and regulations.

AS 400 terminal use and operation.

Ability to:

Effectively communicate both orally and in writing to individuals and groups.

Establish rapport with and maintain cooperative, productive working relationships with staff, volunteers, groups, and the community.

Establish and maintain necessary records and controls, prepare reports, charts and correspondence.

Operate AS400 system, CRT, PC, Fax, photocopier and PBX.

Obtain and record accurate information.
