Description of Work

This position will serve as an Advanced Level Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician (VERT). This is skilled mechanic work involving the service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a large variety of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC10 / $41,655 - $72,897

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls
  • Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment
  • Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
  • Experience in the diagnostics and repair of powertrain components
  • Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities

Additional Expectations:

Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanics tools. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Must have the ability to operate forklift and pick-up truck as needed.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.  Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.  Pre-employment drug testing required.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.**

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
