Job Title: Polysomnographic Tech

Department: Sleep Lab

Reports to: Sleep Solutions Manager

 

Definition of Position:

As a Polysomnography Technician, your compassion and technical expertise will play a vital role in diagnosing sleep disorders. You will perform high-quality sleep studies and help fulfill our mission of delivering exceptional care to our community.


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all relevant procedures and equipment.
  • Operate all polysomnographic equipment accurately and efficiently.
  • Apply sound clinical judgment to ensure quality studies and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Perform all sleep study procedures including setup, data acquisition, staging, scoring, and intervention when necessary.
  • Accurately fit and dispense CPAP/BiPAP devices; troubleshoot and perform minor equipment repairs as needed.
  • Follow universal precautions and safe body mechanics to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and self.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment; report any hazards or concerns promptly.
  • Comply with hospital standards for emergency preparedness, infection control, and equipment safety.
  • Collect and record complete and accurate patient information, including demographics, insurance, and equipment needs.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Ensure timely and accurate charting, documentation of patient activity, and billing.
  • Present a professional demeanor and uphold high standards of conduct, confidentiality, and dependability.
  • Manage stressful situations constructively and respectfully.
  • Actively pursuing opportunities for continuing education and skill development.
  • Apply electrodes according to the International 10-20 System or Sleep Lab-specific standards with appropriate impedance levels.
  • Maintain and calibrate diagnostic equipment, report issues to supervisors promptly.
  • Ensure adequate inventory of clean and functional supplies.
  • Perform and score routine polysomnograms and MSLT recordings on adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Accurately stage and score sleep studies in a timely manner.
  • Administer oxygen and CPAP therapy per physician orders and provide patient/family education on equipment use.
  • Performs accurate scoring of sleep studies (polysomnograms, MSLTs, and MWTs) in accordance with AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) guidelines and departmental standards.
  • Identifies and documents sleep stages, respiratory events, limb movements, cardiac arrhythmias, and other physiological parameters.
  • Recognizes and differentiates between physiological data and artifact; applies appropriate corrective actions or documentation.
  • Completes staging and scoring of studies in a timely manner to ensure prompt physician review and reporting.
  • Maintains scoring competency through regular participation in inter-rater reliability exercises and continuing education.
  • Utilizes scoring software and digital systems effectively to store, label, and organize study data.
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new staff.
  • Accept and transcribe verbal or telephone orders from physicians when required.
  • The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position. (reference program education curriculum).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education

Required: Graduate of an accredited polysomnography program or respiratory therapy program.              

Preferred: NA                                                                                                                                        

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

Required: Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).

– OR –

Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with sleep specialty (RRT-SDS).
