Lead Compliance Specialist

The selected candidate will serve as the EHS Compliance Team Lead for a well-established EHS Compliance and Due Diligence team in the Herndon, Virginia office.  They will need to be knowledgeable in federal and state environmental regulations and auditing practices, as well as the ASTM Phase I process and due diligence practices. The candidate will lead project teams delivering services for EHS compliance support, EHS auditing, EMS/ISO 140001 system development and auditing, and due diligence. They will provide technical direction, training, and mentoring to the team to develop skills necessary for client work and personal development.  They will lead business development and proposal efforts to continue the growth of our EHS services and will collaborate with colleagues in WSP’s Transportation & Infrastructure, Energy, Climate Resiliency and Sustainability, Advisory, and Federal groups.  The candidate will also participate in WSP’s Professional Area Networks for EHS Auditing and Compliance and Due Diligence, as well as regional service line calls to support client delivery and resource sharing.  They will ensure that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards. 

Your Impact

  • Serve as the client manager for the team’s key clients.  Drive sales opportunities and maintain good relationships.
  • Support the pre-sales activities, all phases of proposal development, and post-submission project establishment activities. 
  • Support the overall long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of work for the team and the national EHS service line.
  • Manage and direct project teams including serving as Project Manager. 
  • Provide technical and quality review of the team’s work as well as across the organization as needed.
  • Directly support projects in a technical capacity and meet billable hours targets.
  • Mentor and coach team members on regulations, technical execution, writing, and client relations.
  • Responsible for the profitable performance and successful completion of managed projects. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Local and national travel (up to 50% of the time, seasonally) to support client and agency meetings and/or audit project sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, engineering, or closely related discipline. 
  • 10+ years of experience in the practice of EHS compliance including experience auditing and preparing compliance documentation, conducting environmental site assessments and managing due diligence projects, and developing and auditing EMSs (preferred).
  • Good knowledge of federal regulations as well as state and local regulations in the Mid-Atlantic region (VA, MD, PA, WV, DC).
  • Awareness of OSHA regulations. 
  • Awareness of the regulatory status of emerging contaminants, such as PFAS as it pertains to due diligence and permit requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proficiency with technical and business writing, office automation, and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health and safety, drug and alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work a schedule conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal skills with strong writing, analytical, and organizational skills, a positive attitude, detail oriented, and ability to work both independently and within groups.
  • Willingness to perform a variety of assignments on short notice.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge in environmental management system (such as ISO14001) development and auditing is preferred.
