SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Responsible for transporting residents to local shopping and other approved destinations via the community’s passenger bus. This employee assumes responsibility for and will have latitude for independent action regarding routine bus driving functions. This employee is expected to exercise good judgment in determining the items that are outside the scope of “routine” and bring them to the attention of management. This position is considered an essential function to the operation of the Community therefore, consistent attendance is an essential function of this position, as it directly impacts the employee’s ability to perform their duties effectively and ensures proper workflow and communication within the team.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet residents, prospects, and visitors making them feel welcome and comfortable. 
  • Routine Shopping Trips: 
    1. At beginning of shift, sign out bus at the community office allowing sufficient time to ensure bus is in operational condition prior to beginning route.
    2. Pick up passengers in a timely fashion adhering to the predetermined route and all traffic laws and regulations. Greet residents cheerfully and assist them as necessary to enter and exit the bus. Assist residents with getting groceries or shopping bags on and off the bus. Within the perimeter of pre-determined destinations, and provided the stop is practical and safe, be flexible about exactly where residents are dropped off and picked up. Enforce a no-smoking policy on the bus.
    3. At conclusion of shift, return bus to assigned parking area, return keys to office, and note hours on time sheet. Report unusual situations to management.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to fire, medical, mechanical, accidental, or other emergency situations in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Community. Provide appropriate notifications and log entries as required. Be thoroughly familiar with all emergency procedures and always ensure their accessibility. Report anything that appears to be out of the ordinary.
  • Special Driving Assignments: In addition to the policies and procedures outlined in Routine Shopping Trips and Emergency Response, adhere to any special requirements imposed by the competent authority of a particular destination, such as museums, concert halls, etc. If a driving assignment entail picking up and ferrying passengers to a central gathering place, ensure that enough time is allowed to pick up and deliver individual passengers from any point.
  • Administrative: Maintain passenger counts by pickup location and destination. Maintain bus logbooks on a current basis and make entries as appropriate.
  • Miscellaneous: Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Must possess a valid State commercial driver’s license and must be approved as a driver by the SLN insurance carrier. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • This employee must demonstrate the patient, helpful, and courteous demeanor which is essential to good human relations with elderly and disabled persons.

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Physical Activities up to and including, typing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, or standing for periods of time. 
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.


GENERAL:

  • Hours worked will coincide with the hours of operation in the community. This position may be required to work on weekends as necessary.
  • The Bus Driver is a grant-funded position and, as such, is subject to continuing reauthorizations by funding sources.
