Job Description:

Job Title: Phlebotomist / Medical Assistant 
Department: Lab 
Reports To: Laboratory Manager 
Location: Carolina Oncology Specialists Hickory, NC 

 

Position Summary 

The Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant is responsible for providing high-quality clinical support in an oncology practice setting, including performing venipuncture, assisting providers with patient care, and ensuring an excellent patient experience. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and a compassionate approach to working with oncology patients. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Clinical & Patient Care 

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection accurately and efficiently 

  • Prepare and label specimens for laboratory testing in accordance with established protocols 

  • Assist providers with patient examinations and procedures 

  • Obtain and document vital signs, medical history, and patient information 

  • Administer injections and medications as permitted by certification and state guidelines 

  • Ensure exam rooms are prepared, stocked, and sanitized between patient visits 

Laboratory & Documentation 

  • Process laboratory specimens and ensure timely transport or shipment 

  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) 

  • Follow all safety, infection control, and HIPAA regulations 

  • Monitor and maintain inventory of clinical and lab supplies 

Patient Experience & Coordination 

  • Provide compassionate care and emotional support to oncology patients 

  • Educate patients on procedures and follow-up instructions as directed 

  • Assist with patient flow to ensure efficient clinic operations 

  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to support patient care plans 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Certification 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required 

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) and/or Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) preferred 

Experience 

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a clinical setting preferred  

  • Oncology or specialty practice experience a plus 

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Proficiency in venipuncture and specimen handling 

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment 

  • Comfort working with patients undergoing cancer treatment 

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with EMR systems 

 

Physical & Work Requirements 

  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist patients throughout the shift 

  • Frequent use of hands for clinical procedures 

  • Ability to lift and move supplies or assist patients as needed 

  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and clinical environments
