What You'll Do:

The City of High Point's Financial Services Department/Accounting & Reporting Division is seeking an Accountant I or II (depending on qualifications) to perform technical and professional work in the maintenance and preparation of complex financial records, and other related tasks under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

Essential Tasks

Accountant I

  • Prepares and maintains accounting records and systems;
  • Analyzes and assembles statistical and accounting data and prepares periodic State and Federal reports;
  • Prepares reconciliation on various accounts regularly, journalizes general ledger, and performs all related duties;
  • Maintains related accounting records and systems;
  • Assists external auditors with annual audit and assists with preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report;
  • Reviews current accounting procedures and recommends needed improvements and procedural changes;
  • Variety of other general accounting assignments, including assisting City staff with financial matters;
  • Reviews, verifies and reconciles daily cash transactions to the general ledger; including monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Cross-trains and provides backup in other departmental responsibilities.

Accountant II (in addition to the above):

  • Develops and maintains appropriate accounting records with regard to grants, multi-year financial project management, and trial balances;
  • Maintains general ledger accounts, checks balances, verifies financial data, and prepares financial reports and statements;
  • Analyzes and reconciles subsidiary and general ledger accounts as needed with added emphasis on accounts related to payroll, assets, property taxes, grants, cash, capital projects, and utilities.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with major coursework in accounting
  • One year of accounting experience
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by North Carolina or another state.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting theory, principles, methods, and practices
  • Thorough knowledge of laws, ordinances, and regulations governing municipal financial operations
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger and balance sheet reconciliation.
  • Experience with grant management, capital asset accounting, and governmental budgeting methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare complex financial reports and records.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees and management at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills with flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to think critically, anticipate issues, and proactively recommend short- and long-term solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive work in governmental accounting.
  • North Carolina CPA or NCLGFO.
The work location of this job will be 211 S Hamilton St High Point, North Carolina.
