What You'll Do:

This is a vital front-line position that plays a key role in keeping our city clean, healthy, and beautiful. Sanitation Workers help ensure a higher quality of life for all residents through reliable and efficient waste collection services. This role offers stable, year-round employment, opportunities for growth, and the chance to make a difference in your community every single day.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Empties roll-out carts into the hopper of a rear-packer truck using a mechanical lifter mounted on the back of the truck.
  • Steps up and rides on the step mounted on the rear of the truck as it moves from one collection point to another; holds on securely using hands and arms while the truck is in motion.
  • Collects bags, boxes, and bundles (not to exceed 50 pounds) and places them in the hopper of the rear-packer truck.
  • Assists the truck operator when backing up the vehicle by giving signals or calling out, guides the operator through congested or narrow areas to ensure safety.
  • Serves as a driver trainee as required, offering career progression opportunities for motivated individuals.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining the sanitation truck to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid North Carolina Class B CDL Driver’s License
  • Clean driving and safety record
  • Ability to lead and direct others for extended periods in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the ability to ensure compliance with OSHA and City policies

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Hearing/Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, both in person and via two-way radio or phone.
  • Visual Abilities: Must have the ability to perceive objects and surroundings clearly.

Physical Strength:

  • Medium to heavy work: Regularly exerting up to 50 pounds of force; occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Constant handling, reaching, and occasional fine motor work (e.g., picking or pinching).

Mental Activity/Requirements

  • Reasoning: Ability to apply logical thinking to tasks, respond promptly to situations, and follow safety regulations. Strong judgment skills are essential.

Environmental Conditions

  • Physical Surroundings: Exposure to various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, sleet, and snow. Must be comfortable working outdoors in challenging conditions for extended periods.
  • Hazards: Potential exposure to waste, recyclables, and other discarded materials. Work is subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.

Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment

  • Operate a variety of equipment, including automated side-loaders, rear-loaders, swap-loaders, bulk trucks, and front-end loaders.
  • Utilize equipment such as red and black boxes, green convenience site boxes, dumpsters, two-way radios, mobile carts, and Personnel Resolution tools.
The work location of this job will be 3514 Traingle Lake Rd High Point, North Carolina.
