Department Description 

The mission of the High Point University (HPU) journal, Innovation: Journal of Creative and Scholarly Work, is to publish a journal composed of scholarly and creative works from High Point University undergraduate students. To fulfill this mission, the editors of the HPU Journal of Creative and Scholarly Work solicit and select papers that represent a range of disciplines. 

  

Job Description 

The Student Assistant Editor will assist with the editorial processes for HPU’s Innovation Journal of Creative and Scholarly Works. This role is designed for a detail-oriented student passionate about research, academic publishing, and supporting fellow students in the dissemination of their work. The position offers hands-on experience with academic journal production, from manuscript review to publication. 

  

Job Location/ Hours Required 

Student may work in a variety of locations across campus, including but not limited to their own spaces, so long as confidentiality of information can be maintained. Students will be required to meet regularly with the Editor-in-Chief and occasionally other interested parties. 

Minimum Hours Required Per Week: 8 

  

Responsibilities: 

Editorial Support: 

  • Assist in reviewing and organizing submissions, ensuring they align with the journal’s guidelines and quality standards. 
  • Provide initial feedback on submissions, focusing on clarity, formatting, and adherence to style guidelines. 
  • Collaborate with faculty editors and peer reviewers to facilitate the review process and track revisions. 

Content Management: 

  • Help maintain an organized database of submissions, tracking each piece’s status from submission to publication. 
  • Assist in coordinating communication with authors regarding revisions, acceptance, and publication timelines. 

Copyediting and Proofreading: 

  • Conduct copyediting and proofreading tasks on accepted submissions, focusing on grammar, style, and academic integrity. 
  • Verify citation formats and ensure consistent application of the journal’s style guidelines. 

Production Assistance: 

  • Support the layout and design process, ensuring that final publications meet the journal's visual and formatting standards. 
  • Collaborate with the editorial team on the creation of digital and print editions, preparing documents for publication. 

Marketing and Outreach: 

  • Assist in promoting journal calls for submissions, new issues, and events through social media, campus announcements, and other channels. 
  • Participate in outreach activities to encourage a broad and diverse range of submissions from the HPU undergraduate community. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA 
  • Currently enrolled student at High Point University, preferably with coursework in writing, editing, or research-intensive fields. 
  • Must be able to provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. 
  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Familiarity with (or willingness to learn) academic writing conventions and citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
