About the Role:

The Assistant Director of Residence Life provides leadership, supervision, and strategic direction for residential education and student engagement within University Housing. This live-on professional oversees Residence Hall Directors, student leadership structures, and key residential processes that support student success, community development, and well-being. The role includes operational oversight, staff development, crisis response, student conduct administration, and collaboration with campus partners to enhance the residential experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and evaluation for all Residence Hall Directors (RHDs)
  • Conduct formal evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and professional development for entry-level staff
  • Serve as a member of the departmental Leadership Team (LT)
  • Participate in the LT On-Call rotation for crisis and after-hours response
  • Serve as a member of the Professional Staff Recruitment Committee, when applicable

Student Leadership & Engagement

  • Oversee Residence Hall Association (RHA) and student leadership initiatives
  • Serve as RHA Advisor and provide oversight of Community Councils
  • Support student leadership development through training, advising, and strategic planning

Resident Assistant Program

  • Chair the RA Recruitment, Selection, and Placement Committee
  • Chair the RA Training and Development Committee
  • Manage the KCE Model of Programming and community engagement efforts
  • Support ongoing development and assessment of the Resident Assistant program

Student Support & Community Standards

  • Serve as the first point of contact for elevated parental/guardian concerns
  • Manage higher-level student conduct cases in collaboration with departmental and institutional policies
  • Provide oversight of the roommate agreement process
  • Conduct academic grade checks and facilitate academic success conversations with Resident Assistants
  • Participate on the CARE Team, as available and when permitted

Operations & Administrative Oversight

  • Manage and oversee departmental Resident Assistant Resource Rooms
  • Ensure implementation of residential education practices that support student success and community development
  • Support departmental initiatives, assessment, and strategic priorities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, plus two years of Residence Life, University Housing, or Student Affairs/Development experience
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff or student leaders
  • Experience with student conduct processes, crisis response, or case management
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to respond to after-hours responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field
  • Experience supervising professional live-in staff
  • Experience advising student leadership organizations
  • Experience designing or implementing training programs
  • Familiarity with residential curriculum or educational programming models
  • Experience working with academic success initiatives or student retention efforts

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Possible live-on position with housing provided based on salary allocation
  • Participation in on-call rotation and crisis response
  • Evening and weekend work required based on departmental needs
