Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities

  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results

  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems

  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards

  • Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures

  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications

  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products

  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned



Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


Licenses and Certifications

  • General Engineering Tech I: Valid driver’s license and must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a "CDL" "A" License, with "N" endorsement, within 90 calendar days from date of employment. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
