Job Description: Groundskeeper

*Expected Start Date: October 1, 2026*

Department: Physical Plant 

Reports To: Director of Physical Plant 

Pay Classification: 210 ($20.00/hr)

 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Campus Location:  Hill County Campus 

Job Summary: Maintains the safety, cleanliness, appearance, and functionality of campus grounds and exterior facilities. Performs landscape maintenance, seasonal groundskeeping, equipment operation, and general maintenance activities to ensure a clean, attractive, and welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors.

Minimum Required

Education:                                      High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Technical or vocational training in landscaping, horticulture, facilities maintenance, or a related field.

Minimum Required 

Experience:                                    One year of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, facilities maintenance, or a related field.

 

Experience operating commercial landscaping equipment, power tools, and light maintenance vehicles.  

  

Core Duties and 

Required Knowledge:                  Maintains campus grounds through mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, watering, fertilizing, planting, and weed control to preserve the appearance and health of landscaped areas. 


                                                          Safely operates and performs routine maintenance on commercial mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.

Performs seasonal grounds maintenance, including leaf removal, storm cleanup, snow and ice removal when necessary, and preparation of campus grounds for changing weather conditions. 

                                                          Maintains the cleanliness of campus grounds by removing litter, emptying exterior trash receptacles, and cleaning sidewalks, parking lots, and common areas.

                                                          Identifies maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and equipment issues and reports or addresses them in a timely manner. 

                                                          Maintains knowledge of landscaping practices, equipment operation, irrigation systems, basic building maintenance, workplace safety standards, and applicable environmental regulations. 

Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), follows OSHA and College safety procedures, and reports unsafe conditions immediately.

                                                          Supports compliance with Hill College policies, procedures, and safety standards while maintaining an attractive and functional campus environment.

Assists with setup, teardown, and site preparation for commencement ceremonies, athletic events, and other College activities.

Program Development:               Supports departmental initiatives to maintain a safe, clean, and visually appealing campus. 

                                                          Assists with preventive maintenance efforts that improve operational efficiency and extend the life of campus facilities, equipment, and landscape assets. 

                                                          Identifies opportunities to improve grounds maintenance practices, equipment, and campus appearance and communicates recommendations to supervisors.


Collaboration:                                Works collaboratively with facilities staff, custodial personnel, contractors, and other college departments to support campus operations and special events. 

                                                          Communicates maintenance needs, equipment concerns, and safety issues to supervisors and appropriate personnel. 

                                                          Provides courteous assistance to students, employees, visitors, and community members while performing assigned duties.

                                                          Demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a welcoming and safe environment that provides a sense of belonging for all.

Other Information:                       Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.

Participation in an on-call rotation and response to campus emergencies outside normal business hours may be required. 

Occasional travel to other campuses and locations as needed.

Security sensitive position. 

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Scheduled work hours are Monday – Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with a 30-minute lunch.

This position follows the Campus Safety/Physical Plant holiday work schedule, which differs from the College’s standard holiday schedule.

This position is designated as an essential position. Employees in this role are expected to report to work or remain available during inclement weather, campus emergencies, or other operational disruptions, as directed, to help maintain safe campus conditions and support essential college operations.

Employees called in outside their regularly scheduled work hours should expect to work a minimum of three (3) hours, unless released earlier due to operational needs.

Physical Requirements:               Heavy work; exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The use of arm and or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for medium work.

                                                          Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, pollen, and humidity.
