Summary of Duties

Pay range: $40.79/hr - $59.17/hr

 

The Respiratory Therapist/GI Technician will assist with outpatient and inpatient bronchoscopies and perform outpatient pulmonary function tests. Participates in planning, delivering, controlling, and evaluating safe and effective diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory therapy services. The GI Technician assists physicians and nurses with diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures, handles high-level disinfection of equipment, and ensures the safe preparation and turnover of procedure rooms. Contributes to a positive work environment that promotes HMC values.

 

Patient Care. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently performs respiratory diagnostic testing; performs respiratory treatments according to departmental procedures.
  • Administers respiratory medication safely following hospital and departmental policies.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate respiratory therapy supplies in the department and in-patient care areas.
  • Participates in evaluation of new procedures and equipment.
  • Participates with physicians, therapists and other members of the health team in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of care plans for respiratory patients.
  • Organizes, delivers, and evaluates respiratory care based on physician’s orders and individual needs of the patient; Instructs patients and caregivers about respiratory treatments and issues.
  • Rounds to cardiopulmonary patients and assesses status.
  • Reports unexpected changes in patient condition.
  • Assist endoscopists during complex procedures, handles specimens, and anticipates provider needs.

Administrative Duties. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurately documents assessments, treatments and medications utilizing hospital and departmental formats.
  • Performs manual cleaning, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of endoscopes and accessories per manufacturer and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare procedure rooms with required instrumentation; stock supplies and troubleshoot technical equipment.
  • Transport equipment to support procedures in the ICU, Emergency Department, and Operating Room.
  • Participates in establishing a system to maintain a clean, well-organized, safe environment; reports potential safety hazards.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality according to PHI regarding patient and co-worker information.
  • Participates in a comprehensive inter-shift report of all patients receiving respiratory services and other reportable information.
  • Participates in all required meetings.

Emergency Response. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • As a member of the Code Blue team, provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Maintains emergency resuscitation equipment and other equipment to ensure proper working condition.

Quality Improvement. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in maintaining quality assurance monitors as communicated with Department Manager.
  • Reports discrepancies in care.
  • Participates in retrospective analysis of all aspects of respiratory care in accordance with JCAHO standards.
  • Participates in ongoing education and staff development programs.

Hiring Competencies

Education, Experience, Licenses & Certifications

Required: 

  • Associate Degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in outpatient bronchoscopy setting
  • Minimum one (1) year experience performing pulmonary function tests
  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist in accordance with the State of Oregon
  • Registered with The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • American Heart Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90-days of hire
  • ACLS or required within six (6) months of hire

Preferred:

  • Minimum of six (6) months experience in critical respiratory care
  • Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT)

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of specialty procedures, instrumentation, and equipment, applying best practices.
  • HIPAA compliance and safeguards patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to policies regarding disposal of hazardous waste, sharps handling, and personal protective equipment.
  • Understanding of electronic Health Records (EHR) Systems and office equipment and software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrates high level of technical proficiency with equipment and instrumentation used for specialty procedures.

Skill in:

  • Providing care appropriate to the neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients served based on principles of growth and development and life stages.
  • Effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Time management, prioritization, attention to detail, and multitasking.
  • Speaking, writing and communicating clearly in English to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Using equipment properly according to departmental procedures and/or manufacturer’s guidelines including but not limited to Endoscopy GI Scopes and Towers, Endoscopy GI Tools and Cautery.
  • Following policies for disposal of hazardous waste and sharps.

Ability to:
